Hi,
I have installed a Logitech Webcam Pro 5000 to my PC. The PC is about 4-5 yrs old and is running off XP.
The installation is fine and the video feed on the webcam works fine. However, there seems to be serious distortion on the sound (like a high pitched squeeling). I can hear the other party fine, but my voice comes out as a high pitched squealing on the other end.
I tried to test the microphone on sound recorder and on playback, the same squealing can be heard. On closer inspection, i noticed that when recording, the timer was running prob 2x - 3x slower than normal speed (i.e. one second on the recorder timer would take 3 seconds) and that playback was at normal speed (1 for 1). Hence i think the computer audio is running to slow when recording (on sound recorder) or when using the webcam.
I also tried by using a headset mic on sound recorder and that seemed to work ok. But i have not been able to test the headset on alive webcam chat as yet.
Can you help? Is this a sound card issue or a webcam issue? Is it a conflict between the existing sound card and the webcam drivers (i doubt , as even when recording on sound recorder, this issue occurs).
Any advice or help please?
This is very frustrating
As a workaround you can use the headset, you just need to configure your messenger again to use the sound from the mic input instead from the webcam.

Sorry, i should’ve mentioned, it seems as though the mic is picking up sound, but recording slow and playing it back at normal speed, so the sound coming out seems to be my voice, but played at a much higher speed, hence the squealing type of noise.
The problem is not isolated to Messenger - even when i tried to record using the microphone in Accessories....Entertainment...Sound Recorder... the playback was the same noise. As i noted previously, it seemed to be that the recording was taking place at a much slower speed, and then being played back at normal speed, which is the same as effectively speeding up your normal recording which is what i believe the squealing noise is.
So the issue isnt something specifically to do with MSN Messenger.
As for using the headset, that has only worked in sound recorder, and am not sure it will work in Messenger.
Any other suggestions please?
Agreed using the headset circummvents the problem by using another input, but i am looking for a solution that helps me to identify the exact issue (ie sound card faulty or web cam or a conflict between the drivers of the two) that is causing the sound recorder and messenger etc to speed up the audio when its being recorded.
The reason for this is that using the headset will limit the mic and sound being heard (on my end of the call) to the person that is wearing the headset. This makes it impossible to have more than one person listen/talk from my end on the video call.
Thanks
