Brother HL 5250DN Laser Printer Logo

Brother 5250 The red light for status and yellow light for paper is on. I read the answer to the previous posts for this question and none seem to work. I went to the Brother website, they suggest that there is a paper jam or the tray setting is incorrect. I have checked every possible place for a paper jam and there is none. I have checked the paper tray settings and everything is okay. If I switch the power on and off it sometimes prints one or two pages. This of course is no help. I have tried all of the suggestions and nothing seems to help. Any other suggestions?

status is on red and toner light is on. I've changed toner and checked it on another printer, it works, but when I put it in my printer the red lite and yellow toner lite go on and it doesn't print. I'm using a mac powerbook.

My red status light is on and the yellow paper light is blinking. There is absolutely NO paper jam. I am totally at a loss for what the hell is wrong!

Same exact problem - even when i turn it on and off - unplug it from my network, etc - - the red status light stays on and the yellow paper light flashes! Drive me crazy .... any other ideas to sort this out?

Less than six months old, same problem as everyone else. Just started acting up one day. Turning off and on helped for a bit, but it's becoming a problem every time I print now. Status light goes red and paper light blinks yellow. No jams. Will occasionally print after restarting printer but becoming less and less likely.

Same as listed above.  Out of nowhere.

Have tried all obvious actions to re-set.  My guess is that there's some sort of computer chip/ component that's blown.

Has there been any response from Brother?

Same symptoms. Can't get any pages by pressing the Go button or rebooting the printer so I am completely dead.

I have the same problem. Did anyone ever get this fixed? If so, how?

Status light red. When I try to print it will start to run the paper through and then stop. No other lights are on but the red status light. I've gone through all the steps for paper jam but that's not it. This unit is about 1 year old. HELP!

Paper jam shown (status light red, paper LED blinking) when I try to print. Bypass route (pull down front section of front door) prints OK.

Found a solution - remove paper tray, look underneath just to the left of the feed rollers - there's 2 small black plastic sensor levers. The short one (nearer to the front of the printer) had become bent. It should dock fully (FULLY) into the moulding above it when it is lifted. I warmed mine up by holding the tip of a soldering iron close, and was able to bend it back into shape. Took 3 goes before it was straight enough - it should make an angle of about 30 - 40 degrees with the horizontal in its rest position.

I had the same problem on 4 Brother HL-5250's, I checked the whole printer, and couldn't find a paper jam, yet the red printer light wouldn't shut off. I finally followed the instructions on Brother's website for removing a paper jam, and the solution for all 4 printers was paper stuck in the fuser cover. See below on how to open the fuser cover.

Pull the tabs at the left and right hand sides toward you to open the fuser cover (1).

  1. Brother 5250 - a5250_u_g062.gif
  2. Hint
  3. There are 2 kinds of covers at the rear of the printer. Please make sure to open both the back cover (step 7) and the fuser cover (step8).

I tried without success. Finally, I opened the back of the printer and saw a paper jam that just started to surface at the top. It could not be located anywhere else and was very much hidden. By clearing this jam, I am back to working again.

This is a problem with my 5250 DN also.

Very frustrating. Sometimes I can keep hitting the Green GO button and I can print single pages of my document until all are printed - not very useful.

The paper tray is full, print job is sent to printer, adn only one page will be printed, lights come on, and then I have to hit the Go button for each page.

5250 laser printer says "out of paper" but paper is in tray

the paper light means either the machine is out of paper or there is a paper jam somewhere or the page was sent to the mp tray on the front of the machine
if you don't find a paper jam, try putting a blank sheet in the envelope tray on the front of the machine, this should clear out the job then it should work again

I sprayed dust remover & now the printer won't print. the status light flashes red & the toner, drum & paper lights flashes yellow (hl5250dn)

You may have blown dust or paper shard into one of the optical sensors. These sometimes are used to sense paper position and carriage position. Try cleanig again and pay attention to these sensors.

Brother HL 5250 red light flashing

I found this solution on the web-- Hope it helps.

The HL-2070N gets stuck in a toner end-of-life error condition. Perform the following to clear :
With paper loaded, new toner in,

    Open front door
    Turn off printer
While holding down the GO button, turn printer back on
When all four LEDs light up release GO button. All LEDs will turn off
Press the GO button 2 times. The 3 LEDs (toner, drum, paper) will light up solid
Press the GO button 5 times
    Paper light will be blinking
At this point the toner end-of-life condition has been reset. Close front door.
BTW, I got this from Brother Support. Also, just a reminder, timing is important here so don't pause between button presses.

New HL-5240 printer red status light upon powering up

My HL-5240 did the same thing, Here is what I found:

Look at the back of the printer. Pull down the back cover. Look to the right and the left of the exposed internals of the printer and there should be another handle/knob you can pull down. Pull these both down simultaneously and check to make sure there isn't a piece of paper in there! This was a shock to me! My office printer was held up for days until I found this hidden door in the back! I felt like an idiot that it was from a stupid paper jam!
