I had this problem on a certain brand of laptop,i finally refered to the owners manual to find FN-F5 toggled from the screen to external monitor depending on 1 click or 2 etc and that Fn-F1 put the screen into sleep mode the same way---im not suggesting your machine uses the same sequence keys but it might be worth a try finding out if you have accidently toggled your keys.
you could also be missing your OS or your bios boot sequence is incorrectly set--Press F2 whilst booting to get into boot sequence option of bios)-there navigate with tab or arrow keys--save and exit or reset settings to default and exit--dont change any thing in bios settings until you are familiar with how to navigate and select changes OK!

MacBook Pro won't boot at all

It's hard to say without more information. When you say it doesn't boot, does the screen come on at all? (the first thing that shows during a boot attempt is a gray screen). If the screen does come on, what does it show? Also what year is the macbook pro?

Messed up an IDE partition now BIOS won't recognize drive, can this be fixed or is there a workaround?

During the boot process you will see on the screen to press a certain key to enter setup usually the Delete or F2 key this will vary depending on your operating system and computer Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS the scroll down to advanced bios features press enter Change the first boot device to your hard drive.
The BIOS is AMI. Under ADVANCED SETUP:
The options listed for 1st,2nd ,3rd Boot device include:

IDE-0 means Pri master ?
IDE-1 means Pri slave ?

IDE-2 means Sec master ?
IDE-3 means Sec slave ? Hope this helps.

T61 won't go past the Microsoft loading screen

Press F8 during boot, and load Safe Mode. A program may be preventing a proper startup.

Try disabling startup programs. Go to Start > Run (search in Win 7) and type MSConfig > Startup tab and uncheck anything that you don't want Windows to load automatically. It will make Windows boot faster and use less resources while running.

This just disables them in startup. Programs will still load, but when you initiate.

Hp pavilion dv9000 takes a long time to get past the bios screen. It won't boot of dvd either??

Check BIOS boot options and assign local hard drive as first for faster boot. This is also where you set CD\DVD as first to boot from disc. Look for F Key press on start up. It will be shown on screen. These can vary.

Many HP machines also have a boot menu option during boot. Again an F key and may vary.

Turn on your laptop and look at the first screen that comes up as soon as it is on. This screen will tell you "Press x key to enter setup", replacing "x" with the actual BIOS access key. It's usually "Del" or "F2" on Toshiba systems.

  • 2

Press the key firmly and quickly before the screen goes away. If you do not react quickly enough, you will miss the window of opportunity to enter the BIOS. On Toshiba systems, this window of opportunity is somewhere between two to five seconds.

  • 3

Navigate your BIOS configuration screen to the "Boot" tab. It is usually just before "Exit."

  • 4

As the first boot device, select "USB," or "USB HDD." If you have a "USB ZIP" option, you might be able to boot from it, so select that if you have no other choice.

  • 5

Press the button for "Save and Exit" in your BIOS. The correct button is usually F10.
