Steam wand not working

I've cleaned it, and used various 'amounts' with the lever selection, but after the intial blast of water...there is no steam.

Delonghi magnifica 3200 model has been replaced.

    Hi Johnny,
I've use the machine successfully for 2 weeks. Prior to getting this one I had a DeLonghi ez espresso that operated manully.

I noticed you use a reprint of some advise I've seen on the web...but you've touched all the bases.

My problem is only the steam wand at the moment. I cleaned after every use--so the part about faulty maintenance doesn't hold. I DID however notice a problem when I dipped the wand too deeply into the milk...something that was NOT a problem with my former DeLonghi expresso steamer.

So! This is the part that you wrote that interests me: "Do not allow the steam wands to soak in water overnight since some of the dirty water can be sucked into the boiling tank inside the machine this may cause the steam not to come out"

Is this in some way the same as dipping it too deeply into the milk? If it is, how is that remedied? I don't believe the switch is bad.

    thank you very much

  • zoomer316 May 26, 2008

I've got it working! yeaaa! It is hard to imagine that moving the wand all the way to the right would make a difference...I had operated it "in front"...but as you suspected, some water came out as usual, but then some milk came out. Not very much...I kept the steam coming (not as forceful as my first DeLonghi).

The instruction booklet also mentioned the perils of going "deeper" than the line on the wand ...not at ALL noticible because it's black on black...but I certainly WILL in the future.

    Thanks for your help.

What is the payment required when I click accept? Thanks again,

  • zoomer316 May 26, 2008

Yes, you're right, I responded to jonnie.

Your post was more attuned to the manual machines. Mine is automatic (which has both merits and flaws).

I would have tried your solution had I not been successful...but then noticed you thought it was actually the problem!

There was one sentence that threw me. Here it is: If you are doing this, then this is your problem.

So, I guess I found your explanation a bit confusing.

Removable conical steam tube no longer secures to permanent wand. During steaming, conical tube falls off (into chrome attachment).

The steam wand ejects steam in order to froth the milk. The steam wand should be cleaned after it is inserted into milk and at the end of each day. Do not allow the steam wands to soak in water overnight since some of the dirty water can be sucked into the boiling tank inside the machine this may cause the steam not to come out
Unplug the machine, take the case off, disconnect the switch wires and test it with a continuity meter. If you don't get any continuity, or if it is constantly closed and never open, the switch is bad.
this could have been prevented by regular maintenance and proper use. The usual suspect is a gummed up wand or brew line or user error. Here’s what to look for and how to avoid it.
First, notice what kind of wand you have. Most semi-automatic and porta-filter espresso units will have wands that resemble those on bottom or right, although the tips may be different. Some tips do not slide up and down to alter the aeration, as the one on the bottom does. If your wand is from an older (1990s) unit, it could have a more bulbous tip and a smaller hole in the tip. steam wand not working - wandte1.jpg wandte2.jpgSome of the new wands give you a manual/automatic control.
steam wand not working - wandte3.jpgsrc="/uploads/images/wandte3.jpg" alt="wandte3.jpg" class="h_mi" /> Many of the new super automatics come with an automatic frothing unit, like this one from Jura-Capresso. The nice thing about the frothing wands on Jura-Capresso's new units is that they allow for even more control.
The "Dual Frother Plus" (top) works like the traditional frothing wand. The metal sleeve goes up for steam, down for foam.
The "Froth Xpress Plus" is a very handy device which can be used with the included sleek milk container or a distinct milk container, like a 1/2 gallon jug. The Froth Xpress has a tube (hard for using the included container, flexible for using a different container) that fits into the frothing tube behind the dial shown in the picture above. After selecting froth or steam, the milk is siphoned into a cup below the steam wand. We recommend steaming the milk first, then adding the espresso.

Whatever sort of wand you have, it is essential to keep it clear of solidified milk which can gum up the tip and even the wand shaft. Here are some symptoms of a clogged wand:

  • Little or no steam comes out of the wand
  • Hot water drips from the tip of the wand
  • A squeal or whistle comes out of the wand when the steam function is selected
  • A deep humming is heard when the steam function is selected*
*This is also a symptom of another more serious problem, particularly if you have a pump espresso machine; so if unclogging the wand does not solve it, you should contact a technician.
A good preventative measure against the clogging of a steam wand is regular rinsing in warm, soapy water of the tip and any other removable frothing part. This should be done after each steam wand use. If your machine has a Froth Xpress, it is important to clean all of the hoses, valve, and connectors (be very careful with the plug, however, because it is delicate). All wands should also have steam jetted through them after a frothing cycle is run.
Another preventative measure is to run a steam cycle for about twenty seconds before each new use. This will eject stray particles before they can build up and cause serious damage. There is also a cappuccino cleaner available which can be used in the automatic frothing devices. The solution is placed in a reservoir, and a full cycle is run until the reservoir is emptied. This can be done every few weeks or every few months, depending upon use.
Aside from prevention, there are treatments for a clogged wand. First, remove the tip, if the tip is removable. Usually they are, as in the case of the plastic tips above. The holes are usually big enough to run a pin or even a small paperclip through (emphasize small) to remove the gunk. If these items are too large, do not attempt to use them; instead try using a thin gauge wire from an electrical wire strand. Next, the metal wand itself can have a pipe cleaner run up into it. Start out by putting just about a half inch of the pipe cleaner up the wand, rubbing it around, then pulling it out. Gradually work more of the pipe cleaner up the wand, but never let the length of pipe cleaner in the wand exceed the wand length. We recommend the pipe cleaners with the stiff barbs attached, as opposed to the mostly soft ones. Do the same for all of the hard hoses and connectors. With respect to rubber or soft plastic parts, rinse them in soapy hot water. If flexible hoses form holes, replacements are available (give us a call) or we've even had some luck at aquarium supply stores.
PLEASE NOTE: if you own the Jura X7 or the Froth Xpress Plus, the diameter of the tiny holes is very important. We recommend trying not to put pins into these holes. However, if they must be cleaned and soaking won't work, a smaller gauge wire, a single strand, should do the trick. Always use a strand that is smaller than the diameter of the hole.
Frothing wand technology is advancing at a breakneck speed, but along with these advances come serious precautionary measures for dealing with these very delicate mechanisms. Follow the steps above, and your machine should be producing full-fledged froth for its entire life.

I just saw your other post, If you pull the wand slightly out will this produce steam? Did you prime it first? If so, then the first cup should be done without steam and the next cups should start having steam?

Priming through the steam wand ensures that the boiler is completely full of water since the tube that leads to the steam wand connects at the top of the boiler. To prime the brew group and steam wand turn on the brew switch and open the steam knob. When you get about an ounce of water through through the steam wand close the knob and run about 1 ounce through the brew group, then turn off the brew switch. If you are doing this, then this is your problem.

Another thing, is the water hot still like it used to be when the steam comes out? Please get back to me on my questions and I would be glad to work with you until this is fixed

Fix Drip in Steam Wand for Starbucks Saeco Barista

To fix a dripping steam wand:
First empty the water tray and unplug the unit. Then remove the six metal tapping screws from back of unit. The back lifts off as there is a flange at the top to hold on the metal cover. For some reason, the bottom two screws have lock washers.

On the steam wand there is a recessed set screw that may be removed with an Allen wrench to open the steam wand. The steam wand stem twists out. Inside and stuck in the unit rather than the stem is a pin with a white plastic washer on it. I removed that, cleaned out the unit and the plastic washer. I found that q-tips worked best. I then reassembled after cleaning various parts. Watch the flange when putting the metal cover onto the back of the unit.

Voila! No drip.

No steam or water through steam wand on Gaggia Titanium

Try this, push in on the knob when the flow stops, if that works, then the tap rod needs to be replaced. If your machine has the plastic steam valve assembly, try to get the stainless steel steam valve, I noticed that you have replaced once.

I get hot water, the pump works but no steam. I've cleaned the wand. Is the problem in the high temp. thermostat?

If you've cleaned the nozzle on the wand and still nothing, is the wand hot to the touch when it is open? If no then the valve is blocked at the tube or the boiler connection.

If pump does not work then what should i priory

Need more information to solve your problem.

Does the pump come on (do you hear it?) but no water comes out when you make coffee?

When you select Hot Water and open the steam valve, does the pump run and does water come out the steam valve?

If you hear the pump running but no water is coming out - then it could either be that the pump needs to be primed. In that case you would select Hot Water and open the steam valve all the way and let water run out the wand for a minute or two.

If the steam wand delivers water but you don't get any water when you brew coffee, then either the coffee is ground so fine that the water cannot go through the coffee grinds OR the filter disc may be plugged up. Try grinding coarser and try removing the filter disc and cleaning it with a toothbrush - hold the disc to the light and verify that you can see through all the tiny holes.

If it pumps water for coffee but you don't get water out the steam pipe, then the steam wand may be plugged with hardened milk - in that case remove the plastic frother and soak it and clean it. Also use a bent paperclip to clean the hole in the end of the chrome steam pipe.

If the pump doesn't run at all and you don't hear any pump noises ever - then either the pump has failed or has a loose wire.

Low pressure on milk frother on breville coffee machine

First,I'm NOT a Breville tech, but this is a very common problem with steam boilers. Your valve seal(s) are worn and needs replacement. Any leaking water or steaming from various places other than the steam tip is causing your tank to lose pressure. The heater needs to stay on longer just to keep everything up to pressure and properly heated. You probably noticed that your shots may not have the creme or very thin and watery. Milk steaming takes a long time or not enough steam to complete a froth, especially on a Latte. Your machine needs servicing. Contact your vendor or MFR for service.
** loose steam wands will fall off and be re-assembled without the ball seal or washer. Look around the machine for a round disk made of hard rubber or nylon plastic. Take apart the wand and reassemble with the washer or get a new washer and tighten,.
** other places were you can loose steam pressure is the Anti-siphon valve, Safety valve, and various pipe fittings to the steam boiler. Look for steaming plumes from unexpected areas of the machine.
** Scale that has built up to the point of causing valve problems are usually too much for DE-scaling to work properly. Usually done as a preventive maintenance rather an alternate to repair. Like a blood clot, if you remove it while still in an active system. Where does this clog end up? This debris needs to be physically removed from the pipes, valves, and/or tank. Heavy scaling is a sign of an old machine that will need a lot of servicing to bring it up to MFR specifications.
** Final; The steam wand(s) are the most used (and abused) parts of the machine. Constant cleaning is a required task that needs very diligent baristas to keep it fully functional. I've found that best operators use the following method to keep the steam wand in top condition; Remove milk froth pitcher completely from wand, Send a short blast of steam to clear milk residue from tip. Take a damp towel to grab wand an pull downward to wipe off any remaining milk residue. Leave the wand in a pitcher of cool water to soak during long break periods to help break up any dried milk. Let soak over nite when not in use. Have your operators notify you of any 'loosey-goosey" wands. Tighten them properly but make sure all the parts and washers are there. Check your manual or just ask your technician to show you the next time.

Too much water coming out of steam wand

I worked at StarBucks, what we did was put water into a contaner and steam the water, a lot of the time why the steamer doesn'..t work as well is because it is clogged. Another way to do it is to just run your steamer, also go to a coffee store and buy expresso machine cleaner. It could just need a good cleaning.

Saeco Vienna Digital De Luxe Espresso Machine

sounds like there maybe a vapor lock problem... where there is a problem with the hosing... or vaccuum-like mechanics inside of the machine... Perhaps even there is "gunk" or milk stuck in the steam wand. you have a few options... get a milk pitcher that reaches almost to the top of the steam wand and fill it with ice and water. Allow it to soak for a period of time until, say, there is a decent amount of condensation that has gathered on the outside of the cup. then clean the inside with something that can reach and is non-abbrasive... *a straw may work* clean it out manually... then soak again. try opening the steam wand again and let it steam in the water... if it's not working... preform a cleaning cycle... and include a 'smigin' 1tsp. or 1 tbsp. of vinegar in the water resevior. and let it run all the water through the steam wand... if possible. if it is still posing a problem definantly contact warranty services... or seek a saeco tech in your neck of the woods!
hope this helped!

No steam, just hot water.

The steam wand has to be removed to be cleaned properly. Unfortunately, this procedure is not outlined in the manual. Just cleaning the wand on the outside or using a clip to clean the tip is not enough.

The other end of steam wand where it connects to the pressuring cabin actually swivels around a fitting. It is this fitting that you need to thoroughly clean. Years of using the machine can cause calcification around this fitting.

If you look under this end of hte steam wand, you should see a philllip-headed screw. Before you loosen this screw, you have to remove the grey trim so that the entire wand can be remove.

Once the entire wand is removed, what I just described will be much clearer.
