Hi, I spilled water some time ago on my Acer Extensa 7620Z laptop. The only real problem was that the keyboard stopped working correctly. Instead of having the laptop fixed, I just used an external USB keyboard (I was quoted $$$ to have the keyboard replaced). I see now that keyboards can be replaced at home by purchasing a new keyboard specifically for your laptop. Is this a possibility for me? Thanks!

You most likely have a defective keyboard. Has anything been spilled on it or etc.?? Try to connect an external keyboard and see if that works and if it does that will confirm damage/defect to the laptop keyboard and not some other problem which id doubtful in any case.

Have you tried opening the laptop up again to see if perhaps the contacts under the left-click button were misaligned or something? To me, the easiest way (meaning not opening up the laptop again) is to just double-tap on the touchpad to left-click, or just get a cheap wireless mouse.

Please run system in safe-mode and see if it works then.


If both the keyboard and the touch-pad are not working, please remove the battery and run laptop on A/C.

If that doesn't help, reseat the keyboard cable on the mainboard.

If all fails, replace keyboard - It's a few US $

If it not under warranty I would suggest to open the laptop and reseat the Keyboard cable. Also it might just be that the keyboard is simply faulty - as the space bar is close to bv so maybe it was damaged some time ago. The last assumption I would have that liquid has been spilled onto the keyboard - It stuck bv and space together and everytime you type space, the key that are hooked with the dried liquid come down with it.

The process of removing and replacing the keyboard involves disassembling the entire computer. I do it all the time -- not usually something the average user would want to tackle.

This problem is common with Acer Extensa seies . I've an Acer Extensa myself . and i always get this problem .
In future i advice you to not use the touchpad . Just use an external mouse to prevent this to happen .

You have few solutions to this

1. disconnect the keyboard flex cable from the motherboard so the keyboard is not connected at all.
2. replace the keyboard

On option 1 you would need to take the laptop apart from the top so that you can take the keyboard out so that you can disconnect the cable, then place it back in.


On option 2 you would also need to take the laptop apart / open it from the top to get the keyboard out and disconnect the cable. and replace it with a new keyboard.

Look around ebay for the correct keyboard for your model, here is a ebay listing for acer laptop keyboards

It sound like you have a "key lock" type button on, check to see if you have any keys like the num lock key. that might fix it.

I suggest you to remove battery.
If this is still not working, your keyboard or motherboard is bad.
Did you spills any liquid on your keyboard ? if you did, probably only your keyboard.
From your explanation, i suspect it's motherboard.
