A standard commercial movie on DVD first showed 'no disc' and then on second loading 'disc not recognised' after it had spun the disc up. This has happened to several discs. All discs work in any other player, including PC and Mac computers. The DVD Recorder/player is at fault. Is there a cure?

Please try to put in an ordinary audio CD track and see if this is detected. If yes the optical is working, if not there is no laser scanning and the possibility of the head being faulty is high.
Now certain cleaner disks are not read and so will not be tracked. Hence the rejection but the best is for cleaning manually the laser head eye with a cotton bud very softly and without any pressing of the lens eye.
If there is still no result then watch the CD if it spins or tries to spin. If the head unit moves up or down to focus or in and out of the drive, if so the board seems to work correctly and the possibility of the optical head being the suspected fault is closer.
Finally try to see if the set records on a DVD with a given signal source. If not the fault is confirmed.
But if any of the above seems otherwise we must recheck with possibilities of the processor board

Selective playing of DVD's on Sharp DVD Recorder

Given that the machine will read disks it has written itself but not play regular discs, I suspect the lens assembly is slightly out of alignment and needs adjusting. This is not normally something you can do at home unless you have the correct test gear. It will need to go to a repair shop. One thing you can try before that is to clean the lens. Buy a quality (Scotch 3M, Philips ) cleaning disc and try it. Could be it's only a speck of dust on the lens.....

Toshiba REGZA won't play DVD. Shows "disc loading" then goes to wide screen mode, but then ejects the disc. Whats up?

Sounds like the laser pickup unit to the DVD player is faulty. Contact any service technician to replace it. The disc mechanism should be taken out of it to replace this part.

What fix to apply to HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GWA4164B in Dell Dimension E310 so it can read/play a dvd movie?

Try the following:

1. Go to the Dell.com support site and be sure you have the latest updates for your computer's operating system and the DVD drive, especially the DVD drive's drivers BIOS.

2. Make sure you have the software to play the movie, like Sonic, Windows Media Player, Power DVD, Quicktime, etc. and be sure they are the latest versions.

3. Depending on the movie format, not all DVD drives will play all DVDs. The most common discs are DVD-R and DVD+R and file types like *.avi, *.mpeg, *.mp4, *.mov and then commercial formats. Also try the movie in another machine or DVD player and see what happens.

When trying to play a computer generated DVD +R DL, I get a message that says this type of disc cannont be played. please insert a different disc

The disc is probably an incompatible format for this model player. Even if the disc is finalised in your PC, or in a DVD recorder, this player may still be unable to read it. Some DVD recorder/players do not recognise DVD+R (or +R DL) media, while others won't recognise +/-RW discs (except CD-RW); this is a model limitation - not a fault with either your player, the PC burning software or the discs themselves.

Nothing can be done to fix this except purchasing a model which accepts multimedia (+R/DVD-RAM etc). The question is, does your player play ANY normal DVDs? I am guessing your player will accept DVD-R DL discs just fine since this is standard as well as proper shop-bought movies.

Toshiba satellite ps141e 181g1w en 256ram 2ghz celeron wont play commercial dvds

Hello tango13

(01) Which partition(s) is/are FAT32?

(02) Which partition(s) is/are NTFS?

(03) Do you mean your OS partition is FAT32?

A Microsoft Windows OS on FAT32 cannot "see" NTFS partitions. Conversely though, it can see FAT32 and NTFS partitions if the Microsoft OS partition is NTFS.

(04) If your OS is on a FAT32 partition, you need to convert it to NTFS if it is to be able to "see" other NTFS (and FAT32) partitions.

(05) If I didn't understnd you correctly, please, in detail, explain the problem again and tell us what the file system is on each of the partitions you refer to.

(06) What did you install from Toshiba OEM discs?

(07) Do you mean that, after performing one reinstall of WinXP Home that you then used the Toshiba System Restore CDs to restore the system again? (effectively wiping out the 1st reinstall of Windows XP you said you performed)?

(08) What precipitated your reinstalling your OS in the 1st place? (I ask because the reason(s) may be connected to the issues you are currently experiencing.)

(09) Your media player and codec issues are not related to your file system issue(s).

(10) How many **DIFFERENT** commercially-produced DVDs have you attempted to play in your laptop's DVD ROM drive?

(11) The DVD ROM drive spinning and not being able to read your DVDs is either (1) a media compatibility issue or (2) the media is dirty or damaged, or (3) a mechanical issue w/ your DVD ROM drive. In any case, I seriously doubt if it is a software issue. IOW, I believe it is a hardware issue.

(12) Make sure of the following:
(A) The movies you are attempting to play are actually on DVD media and not Blue Ray or some other media type that is incompatible w/ your optical drive (DVD ROM drive).
(B) The media (discs) are clean and not scratched, warped or otherwise damaged.

Please, post back here w/ answers to these questions along w/ any more questions, observations, or comments you might have. Let us know also what else you've tried in attempts to correct the issues you're experiencing.

Thank you
BJ @:)

Wont play commercial dvds

should i assume that the drive work previouly with com dvd? my annlysis of this problem is that the dvdrom is not able to read the format the dvd is in. the format of the hard drive does not determine the ability to read or not read a dvd. that is the job of the optical disc.so dont worry about the format that is in.ok. the other aspect of the ability to read dvd is the software. windows media player and other that are of age has a inability to play some new format dvd. best bet install the newest version of power dvd put the disc and check should start automat pending setting you may need to go to my computer and double clickon the romdrive. let me know.
