T30's do have a well reported problem with their memory slots. It is possible to fix it if you are brave and moderatly competent with a low-power (15-20W) soldering iron with a good bit (I recommend a flat oblique tip of about 2-3mm, not a pointed one).

Firstly, heat the soldering iron and clean all traces of solder from the bit. You can use a wet solder sponge, or even damp kitchen paper. It is VITAL to remove all solder.

Remove power and battery from the T30. Open the memory cover, and remove all memory.

Taking great care, press the bit of the hot iron with moderate pressure (about twice what you would use to press a key with one finger) on each pin in turn for about 1 second, on the contacts of the memory slot that is not working. Because you have no solder on the tip, it does not matter that you touch more than one contact at a time, but there are very small surface mount capacitors between the sockets. Be careful not to touch and unsolder these.

There is a warning here. Do no wipe the iron across the contacts. Always lift the iron before pressing it on the next pin(s). If you do wipe iron across the contacts, you WILL bend and short them. These are surface mount components, and the wire contacts are easily disturbed and shorted. If you do short the contacts, it will be difficult or impossible to fix.

Remember there are pins on both sides of the memory socket. Do not worry if some of the plastic of the socket melts, it is not a problem.

Continue until you have worked on all of the pins. Patience is a virtue here. Allow to cool, re-assemble and test.

I cannot promise that this will fix your T30, but I have extended the life of 2 out of 3 T30s I worked on in this way. Note extended, because the design flaw will cause the problem again sometime in the future. The board appears to flex, which puts strain on the solder joints.

Alternate solution to my last one.

Take the memory cover off. Press on the plastic of the memory socket that you believe is faulty. Power on the T30.

Try applying pressure at different points. If you find a point that allows the T30 to power up properly (I've found on mine that it is almost always at the end close to the edge of the T30), try finding something un-compressible about 0.75-1mm thick, and place it on the sensitive point, and close and memory cover. A piece of an ice-lolly stick may be about the right thickness.

If you use something compressible (like hard rubber sponge), it may work, but over time will become less effective as it becomes squashed.

I've noticed that the 1-3-3-1 error is a no-memory error detected by the BIOS POST. If you can make the memory work with pressure, once it gets past the Thinkpad splash screen, it may be that you can release the pressure. I can on this T30 I am currently using.

If you read my previous solution of soldering the sockets, then you can safely assume that the pin that needs soldering is very close to where you apply the pressure. This may allow you to re-solder fewer pins.

1331 no ram seen , try putting one chip in slot one,closes to the middle ,take apiece of cardboard and push in,turn on if it works you have solder issues,I have seen ebayers that will resolder ,flux them $60 good luck if you only have one bad one a 1g chip in the other TA72

Ya eee, The infamous IBM / Lenovo T30's have a built- in fault !!
They forgot to properly solder in BOTH memory bays !!
ONE bay will support a total 512 Gb, but don't count on the OTHER BAY to show ANYTHING !! Check it out with PROPER MEMORY, I betcha will find me correct....Been there, done that !!
NOTE: stay away from any IBM / Lenovo laptop from T30 on up..(Made in Chinko- Land...) !!

1331 beep code driving me nuts..took a suggestion on a whim (why not? nothing else worked)..removed memory cover and stuck a folded up paper towel in and reapplied the cover..IT WORKED! GO FIGURE!

The chance of this happening is rare. I suddenly had my third computer fail because of 1331 (a memory error issue, you say.) Stuff never used to fail on me like this until the Mystery School Cult began messing up all my stuff. So what I'm saying is messing with you memory is a big thing that they do with your body too. so they get a giggle if they mess up you computer memory.

I had same problem on T30... I was only able to get memory Slot 1 working again. using pressure on the memory chip. I put a wad of that poster-sticky-plasticine stuff on the chip and then pressed the cover back on. So far so good, after a month it seems to be keeping the chip securely in place.
