When I use auto focus and automatic mode the pictures seem to be too dark. A picture taken in bright sunlight looks like it was taken on an overcast day. I also have a Nikon 5700 that takes much brighter pictures in the same light. Is there a way to adjust the exposure settings for the automatic modes or do I need to set something else differently?
I have the Canon EFS 18-35 lens that came with the camera and also an EF 75-300 zoom lens. The light levels are pretty much the same with both lenses??I have the Canon EFS 18-35 lens that came with the camera and also an EF 75-300 zoom lens. The settings in Auto Mode are factory set. If you want to adjust exposure and shutter speeds then you will have to shoot in Manual Mode (TV=Shutter Priority, AV=Aperture Priority, M=Full Manual)

Could be your camera is still working, but some settings are messed up?
You could have turned off the display. In the menu with IMAGE DISP. Is used to save battery power.
Then try making pictures in the mode automatic. Because if you switched to scene like bright sunlight or snow your pictures can be very dark.
That would explain the darkness if the lens is stopped down. It would seem the aperture control is faulty on the camera body. Normally, the aperture remains open until you take the picture. It is only closed down while the shutter is open.
I had the same problem before. Did you check to make sure your exposure compensation wasn't set at a negative number? half press the shutter and rotate the large dial on the back of the camera to change the exposure to 0. If this just changes your auto focus points, you have to change your custom function 13 from a value of 2 to 0 and then try half pressing the shutter and rotating the large dial in the back again. This fixed my problem with shooting in P mode (which I only used when absolutely necessary) and I hope it helps you.

In this mode, the true appearance of the street is captured. The camera automatically sets the optimal shooting conditions. If you use the flash, you can take pictures of both your subject and the night background.

Program shooting (P)
Program shooting allows you to shoot using an aperture and shutter speed that the camera sets. You can set the flash, white balance, or other functions manually.
Aperture priority shooting (A)
Aperture priority shooting allows you to set the aperture manually. The camera sets the shutter speed automatically. Increasing the value will let the camera focus over a wider range in the forward and backward directions, resulting in a picture in which
