Hi,
ODT file is created by LibreOffice and open by self & with Microsoft word also. You can try to open your .odt file in Microsoft Word, if its not open then try to open in Office Writer tool. Sometimes heavily corrupted .odt file will not open in any office tool then you must try Thrid Party Tool to open .odt file. I personally suggest you to follow below mention link:

Have a nice day!

Thanks

A .odt file is created by Open Office (an OpenSource Substitute to Microsoft Office). There are two ways to convert your .odt file to .doc file that is recognized by MS office.
1st method(Easiest) In this method you just have to upload your .Odt file to Google Docs(http://docs.google.com) and then use the save as doc option while saving it to your computer. (you may need a google account)
2nd method(Slow) In this method you have to go here http://sourceforge.net/projects/odf-converter/files/ to download and add an addon of office that will let you open .odt documents in MsOffice.
I would recommend the 1st method.
Hope this will help for sure......cheers:)

Hi .odt files will not be opened by MS word as a default. Most likely MS Word does not have the latest service pack. For Windows 2003, download Office 2003 SP2 as a minimum (available from Microsoft)
Download, Install and reboot computer if required.
When PC starts, start up MS Word 2003 which will have SP2 installed.
Locate the ODT file and then double click it. As SP2 for Office 2003 is installed (or MS Word 2003) The file will now open. The formatting might be a little off, but for the most part, all the text will be there and you'll be able to edit and make changes as you see fit.

We have windows xp but microsoft 2003 loaded. Files come out as ODT files when we try to open them on another computer Can we convert them to files that can be opened?

It seems you actually have OpenOffice.org installed, not Office 2003. The filetype that it saves as default are ODT files, to solve this:
  1. Open the file on the computer you saved it on, and choose File>Save As.. and select the .doc format.
  2. Or use this site to convert the documents.
  3. To make saving .doc files the default behaviour, open the program, go to Tools>Options, click the Load/Save option on the left, and then General.
  4. In the bottom right, search for "Always save as" and select "Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP"
  5. Refer to this picture: crash91.png

I am unable to open any of the attached files

You must identify the file extension of the file, example if its resume.odt, odt file extension will works only for open office application. It is important to identify the file extension so that you will know what kind of program or application you are going to use. Have a nice day.

We have no microsoft word office in our computer

Computers do not automatically come with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excell, Powerpoint, Access). If you own it, you need to find your install CD's and install it. If you have not purchased it, you can buy it at your own favorite electronics store such as Best Buy, Fry's, tigerdirect.com, etc. If you do not want to buy it there is an open source (free) version called Open Office. You can download it by going to www.openoffice.org. It is 100% legal and free of charge, but they ask for a donation; software development takes time, and effort. You do not have to donate if you don't wish. Also keep in mind that while this program will read most doccuments written using word, when you write a file, the default format is .odt though you can "save as" a .doc file (word's default format).

Want to convert odt files to doc files

Providing that you have the OpenOffice writer software installed on your computer the process is quiet simple.

1. open the .odt file using OpenOffice writer
2. from the top menu bar select File and choose Save As from the drop down options or Press (Ctrl+Shift+S)
3. click the down arrow on the Save as type text box near the cancel button.
4. Choose the .doc version you want
5. click save

If you don't have OpenOffice on your computer it is free to download http://download.openoffice.org/ and then use the steps outlined above
OR
online you can go to http://www.freefileconvert.com/ where you can simply do it online by uploading your .odt file and selecting which format you wish to convert it too.

Microsoft works 7.0

From the Microsoft Office 2003 Web site:

Excel 2000 or later versions cannot directly open files created in Microsoft Works version 3.0 or later. To open a Works file in Excel, first open it in Works and use the Save As command to convert it to one of the file formats listed below. Then close the Works file and open the converted version in Excel.
  • Works for Windows 2.0/Works for DOS SS
  • Excel SS
  • Lotus 1-2-3
To open a Microsoft Works database file in Excel, first save the file in Microsoft Works as a dBASE file, and then open the dBASE file in Excel.
