Hello, Thank You for using FixYa. I will be helping you today. The only time you add freon to an AC unit is if you find a leak and repair it! If its not cooling well you should just clean the front and rear coils.

Hi, The
unit is probably low on freon and so it is running too cold....this
trips the freeze stat and shuts down the compressor till it warms up The unit will
need to be recharged or replaced...
Here is a tip that I wrote about how to add refrigerant to a air

Hi,
Here is a tip that I wrote about how to add refrigerant to a air conditioner or
cooling system
this could be a multitude of things: you said it worked when installed, window unit right anything punture the coil exposed to outside, if so freon leak no freon no cool Secondly is the filter dirty these unit needs to breath to work if its dirty it wont cool. switches in the same position turn them back and forth a few times see if that helps. always look for the obvious first and work your way back from there. If this is the first time you ran it since purchase was anything punctured on install if not maybe it was a lemon take it back if possible if not charging these things are a pain, it will need taps on the high and low side this should only be accomplished by a licensed professional and could be costly. give this a try and goodluck
You have to put a piercing valve on the sucction side because this units don't come with service port, but if you going to add freon ,it is better to fix the leak before and after that replace the drier and vacum the system.
Modern window units intentionally do not allow the water to drain directly, they want the fan blade to sling the water on to the condensor (the coil that is outside) to aid in cooling actually helps the unit cool better in high outside temps, it also evaporates it this way, depending on where the hole was drilled it may be able to be repaired, if it was just a copper tube it will be less expensive than replacing the whole coil. Since its a relative inexpensive unit anyway the labor and freon may be more than its worth. Lesson learned dont drill a hole in the base it lowers it's efficiency and can lead to a punctured freon line.
