I acquired a house with a hampton bay fan with an internal remote receiver. The remote transmitter is lost. Can I buy a remote transmitter without knowing what kind of receiver I have? Or how do I disassemble the fan to get at the receiver to replace it and the transmitter? Thanks for any advice or help that you can provide.

In case someone else stumbles upon this:
I replaced the remote receiver on one of these fans. jb is right just the top housing that touches the ceiling needs to be removed. Twist it counter clockwise and pull down. You'll see all the wires and the remote receiver. It might not seem like much room to work with, but you can remove the wires and slide the receiver out sideways to replace it or if you can't see the dip switches. Too bad Home Depot is too cheap to even provide instructions when they send you the replacement remove receiver.
I could not see the screws on a Windward III as they are concealed with a plasitc ring, the ring is turned counter clockwise and reveals the screws. Remove the screws and pull down the canopy revealing the remote receiver and wiring.
no jb is not right, the hampton bay fan has the receiver inside the fan housing not the canopy same thing on the winward 2

No fan disassembly, just the houseing mounted to the ceiling. the transmitter is in there. U can try and match it to a new remote or look for some number on the transmitter. However u can usually buy a new remote and transmitter for 30 bucks and just swap out the transmitter. They come labeled and r pretty easy to install.

I have a hampton bay fan 54 inch callaway. It has a built in remote with a handheld device. I lost he hand held and now I can't turn off the fan and leave the light on. When you turn on the wall switch it turns on both fan and light since that how it was set when I lost the remote. Where can I find the hand held device.
