Problem with singer athena 2000. Needle moves up and down when hand wheel is turned manually but not when using foot control. What's the probleme?

Does the motor rev when the foot control is pressed down? If you don't hear the motor, then the problem could be the foot pedal rheostat or the motor itself. If you do hear the motor, then the motor belt is probably worn. The belt connects the motor to the hand wheel to needle bar mechanism.

The parts are available from several suppliers, including https://www.sewingpartsonline.com/singer-2000-sewing-machine-parts.aspx?index=72 and https://www.singeronline.com/2000.html . These sites have both the motor belt and the foot control.

I hope this helps.

The handwheel will turn manually but it will not move using the foot pedal. The sound it makes when I press on the foot pedal *sounds* like I am filling the bobbin.

Turning wheel disconnected from motor?

I would try replacing the needle, as it may have got bent. I have had this happen and I was sure needle wasnt effected. when I changed needle it was fixed. The very tip of my old needle had a slight curve and wasnt connecting to correct spot on throat plate. make sure you have needle in highest position and that stitch selection in turned back to straight stitch.

The foot pedal wont move the needle

Ok, I am assuming that you have an old style machine where the hand hand wheel has the larger balance wheel on the outside and inner knob to release the drive to the needle and feed dogs. If that has been removed and not put back together properly it won't work.

There is a special locking washer inside those that have "fingers" pointing to the inside of the circle. They must be fit into the shaft correctly before the knob is returned into place and the little screw is tightened down.

This guy is a bit of a windbag but watch his video... you'll at least see the part I'm talking about. He shows the part at about 9:50 in the video.

I have a babylock 1556 and when I press the foot petal the belt turns, but it won't move the needle up and down. I took off the back so I could watch and see what was going on. I can see the belt...

On the side of the 'knob', look for another wheel that tightens against that, so it engages, that's what it sounds like. When that second wheel is loose, it won't run, it just spins. From the photo I can find of the unit, it looks like that second wheel is below it, but I can't be certain. Let me know how you make out. Please rate and comment, thank you,

Make sure that the bobbin winder stop is up. That is the little black post below the bobbin winder. If it is pressed down, the machine will not run.
