I bought the tv recently from bestbuy now im hooking my hd cable box up to it using hdmi, now sound is the issue, i am unable to get sound when the hdmi is conneted i tried running av cables but no luck there, and suggestions on how to get sound to the tv from my box.
I just bought the Insignia 26 inch lcd from future shop and have the same problem so I hope this belongs here. My new Motorola 505 HD sat receiver does have dvi no hdmi but I went out and bought the dvi to hdmi converter and there was no sound. Using the AV input on the side of the TV the dvd player and game console's audio/video worked fine.
I tried the 3 component cables that came with the HD receiver and attached separate audio cables (several different ones to make sure it wasn't the cable) and still no luck. I then tried a process of elimination by hooking the Insignia to the same model receiver that works perfectly with my LG. I did get audio but this time the picture was seriously degraded (barely any colour) with bright coloured vertical lines that moved in synch with voices. (ie: the lines would diminish when conversations were becoming inaudible and then the lines would move up again when the voices became louder and so on much the same as a frequency analyzer looks. This is a very weird problem that the original poster experienced and then some.
Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? Thanks in advance.

Is it possible that the output on your HD cable box is actually DVI and not HDMI type? the reason I mention is because the majority of HD cable boxes still have DVI outputs which CAN be converted to HDMI but DO NOT carry an audio signal, which would explain what is happening to you right now. If you DO have a DVI connection on your box as I had guessed then all you would need to do now is either hookup standard stereo RCAs from your cable box to the TV or preferrably, an optical digital audio cable from your HD box to the TV. good luck!
It may be the top of set box.. Most times the sound and picture are auto detected by the set when HDMI is used. Both sound and video are carried in a HDMI cable but not with a S video cable. Try another HDMI cable *** dont buy the expensive one the tv don't care if they cost $125 or $25.

Personally I would use an RCA cable and hook up the AVR.
((RCA out of TV to AVR audio in))
((cable box HDMI cable output to TV HDMI Input1))
(As far as the AppleTv I would use a separate HDMI Input2)
If your AVR has a dvd or blue ray player Hook up a
HDMI cable out to another Input HDMI3 of the TV
using separate inputs on the tv will allow your surround system to be
used on all modes(CABLE,DVD/BLUERAY,APPLETV)
Is your cable box HD? It would be best for your tv. You can hook up a couple of ways depending on your receiver and tv in/out capabilities. You will always get best picture if you go directly from your cable box out to tv in. You should have capabilty to go HDMI out and perhaps Component out on your cable box. If you can't get hd receiver from cable company. Anyway, if you use HDMI, hook to HDMI out on receiver to HDMI in on tv. HDMI provides audio and video. You can also go componenet(red, blue, green) out from recevier to in on tv. I personally feel component gives you better picture but , doesn't carry audio. For that you need to get audio using either digital optical or, composite cables. You may have to set your HD on receiver through cable boxes menu. The last option is using composite cables(last choice, poorest picture and sound) yellow(video) and red, white(audio)
It could be the version of hdmi cable you are using. It could also be what version hdmi the television is vs. what version hdmi cable you are using vs. what version hdmi the hd box is. See if you still get this problem when you use component.
Check the setup menus of the Insignia TV, as most sets have an advanced setting hidden deep in the setup menu to use the HDMI cable for sound - OR- use component RCA inputs for sound. My Philips TV has this.
It's odd that this only shows up for SD content...I would see if there is a firmware update available for that from the manufacturer. The one thing that you see lots of firmware fixes for are HDMI issues.
Connect the HDMI outputs on your various components to the HDMI inputs
on your receiver. Connect the HDMI output on the receiver to the input
on your TV. HDMI incorporates digital audio, so no need to buy optical
audio cables. If your receiver does not have HDMI inputs for all your
components, you will need to make a choice. HDMI = Best, component
video + optical audio = second best, S-video+ optical audio = third
best
I found that since the Panasonic TH50PZ80U TV has only 2 HDMI ports on the back of the TV, the best solution for me was to use component (red, blue, green) cables to connect the Home Theatre to the TV. I suppose I/you could connect the home theatre to the HDMI port on the front panel, but I don't want cables hanging out the front of the TV (personal preference). Unfortunately, I am no longer able to use the VIERA Link functionality available by connecting all Panasonic components to each other using HDMI cables, but I feel it's a small price to pay for the incredible picture quality acheived by using the HDMI cable to connect the HD Cable Box to the TV. I may yet be able to control everything using the HD Cable Box remote, but I haven't gotten that far yet but I've got Comcast coming on Saturday and hopefully they can let me know if this is possible: let me know if you have a solution.
So here are the components and the cable types used to connect:
HD Cable Box to TV: HDMI cable & Optical Audio cable
Home Theatre to TV: Red, Blue & Green component cables
I had the exact same problem on a brand new Insignia 26 " LCD with DVD. Comcast tech was able to fix it by changing the Comcast box diagnostics. Here is what he did. Using the Comcast remote with the TV on - press power, cable, menu in that order. A comcast diagnostic srceen will appear. Select Additional HDMI options, then audio options. Change the audio options to L-PCM. Press power again to exit the diagnostics. That will fix it and you get to use the HDMI cable.
You need a audio cable for sound. HDMI cable is only for picture. I use the comp 1 plugs myself, better picture. I found with my TV that the HDMI cable is only good if you have a digital box for it. You can also use the plug to hook your computer to off your graphics card and watch downloaded movies on.
Seems that Hitachi DESIGNED the sound to cut off from the Audio Out jacks if you use component video or HDMI inputs. Has to do with copyright laws of the HD Video -- which makes it asinine that they disabled the audio as well, as it's not part of the copyright issue. Seems to me they were just lazy to disable the ENTIRE set of output jacks.
I am hoping to find some sort of hack for this (either firmware or severing/splicing a control wire). However, I can't find much information on this yet.
