How to continue using device as answering machine but route fax to new HP all in one

I want to continue using the device as my answering machine. But i've recently bought a HP 7580 and want to route faxes in and out through it INSTEAD of the Panasonic machine. I've hooked up the printer into the fax but can't figure how -if any way- to bypass the Panasonic wanting to get the fax.

You can probably call your telephone company and ask them to assign a new number for your HP 7580 fax. Have it connected to a different telephone outlet from the PANASONIC.

Hook the answering machine after the fax and set the fax to answer after 4 rings and the machine after 5.

This option should be somewhere within the menu of the HP

Let me know if you can't find it

Woops I guess I had it backwards the fax should be set for more rings than the answering machine. Here is a part from your manual

Set the number of rings before answering
If you turn on the Auto Answer setting, you can specify how many rings occur before
    incoming calls are automatically answered.
The Rings to Answer setting is important if you have an answering machine on the
same phone line as the device, because you want the answering machine to answer
the phone before the device does. The number of rings to answer for the device
should be greater than the number of rings to answer for the answering machine.
For example, set your answering machine to a low number of rings and the device to
answer in the maximum number of rings. (The maximum number of rings varies by
country/region.) In this setup, the answering machine answers the call and the device
monitors the line. If the device detects fax tones, it receives the fax. If the call is a
voice call, the answering machine records the incoming message.
To set the number of rings before answering via the control panel
    1. Press Setup.
    2. Press Basic Fax Setup, and then press Rings to Answer.
    3. Enter the appropriate number of rings by using the keypad, or press the left or right
arrow button to change the number of rings.
    4. Press OK to accept the setting.

you may download the manual at the following link

Cannot receive a FAX but can send FAX on a HP Photosmart C7180 All-in-One

are you using the same line for fax and phone???
are you using a Telephone Answeing machine or a Voice Mail??
However you can follow the following steps

1. Press the power button to turn off the HP fax product.
2. Wait for 20 seconds, and then press the power button to turn on the HP fax product, and then connect one end of a two-wire telephone cord to the telephone jack and the other end of the cord to the port labeled 1-Line on the back of the HP fax product.
3. Make sure that there is plain white paper in the input tray.
4. Press the Setup button on the product Control Panel.
5. Press the down arrow to select Tools, and then press OK.
6. On the Tools menu, press the down arrow to select "Run Fax Test", and then press OK. The Fax diagnostic test prints.
7. Review the report.
If the test lists faxing issues and solutions, the fax test failed.
Try the steps on the printout to troubleshoot the issue as the report is specific to your product and faxing environment.
Repeat the fax test after fixing the listed faxing issues to make sure the test passes. Try to receive a fax.
Okay, next, we need to make sure that the Auto Answer feature is turned on by following the steps below:
When the Auto Answer feature is on, the HP fax product automatically answers incoming fax calls. When off, the HP fax product does not answer any incoming fax calls.
1. Press the Setup button on the product Control Panel.
2. Press the down arrow to select Basic Fax Setup, and then press OK.
3. On the Basic Fax Setup menu, press the down arrow to select Auto Answer, and then press OK.
4. Press the down arrow to select On, and then press OK.
5. Try to receive a fax.
Since the issue persists, the problem could be due to some conflicting telephone services.
The following telephone company services might block or interfere with incoming faxes:
Distinctive Ring Service: A distinctive ring service, if it is available from the telephone service provider, often resolves this issue.
* Voice mail: It is possible to use the fax in manual receive mode while using a voice mail service. For manual receive mode, turn off auto answer and press "Start Fax Black" or "Start Fax Color" on the control panel before the voice mail picks up the line to start receiving the fax.
* Call waiting: Do not use a call waiting service on the same line connected to the fax machine. The click sound caused by an incoming call can cause the fax to fail.
* Privacy block
* Security screen
* Anonymous call rejection
* Privacy manager
* Any other service that screens or intercepts incoming calls
If any of these services are on the telephone line connected to the HP fax product, contact the telephone service provider for its recommended solution.
After addressing any existing conflicting telephone services, try to receive a fax.
Try contacting telephone people
try changing the settings below
1. Press the Setup button on the product Control Panel.
2. Press the down arrow to select Advanced Fax Setup, and then press OK.
3. Use the down arrow to select Fax Speed, and then press OK.
4. Use the down arrow to select Medium, and then press OK.
5. Try to receive a fax again. If the HP fax still cannot receive a fax, try lowering the fax speed even further
Next, change the "Rings to Answer" setting on the HP fax by following the steps below:
1. Press the Setup button on the product Control Panel.
2. Press the right arrow key to select Basic Fax Setup, and then press the OK button.
3. Press the down arrow to select Rings to Answer, and then press OK.
4. Use down arrow to select the desired number of rings, and then press OK. you cn change the rings to answer to 6 if your telephone answering machine picks up the call after 4 rings.
Try to receive a fax.
If the HP fax still cannot receive a fax, change the following steps
1. Press the Setup button on the product Control Panel.
2. Use the down arrow to select Advanced Fax Setup, and then press OK.
3. Use the down arrow to select Error Correction Mode, and then press OK.
4. Use the down arrow key to select Off, and then press OK.
1. Plug the telephone cord directly into the telephone jack and not through any other device.
2. If present, remove any splitters or other devices attached to the line, except for a DSL filter.
3. If the telephone cord is over 3 m (10 ft) long, move the fax closer to the telephone jack, and then use a cord 3 m (10 ft) long or shorter.
4. Connect the other end of the telephone cord directly to the back of the HP fax product into the port labeled 1-Line.
5. If other devices such as, telephone answering machines or computer modems, are attached to the telephone line, remove them. If devices attached to other extensions of the same telephone line are present, remove them for this test.
6. Try to receive a fax.
If removing telephone devices and connections allows the HP fax product to receive faxes, this indicates interference from one or more of the removed devices. Interference can be caused by incompatibility or by using too many other telephone devices at once. Telephone devices can be added back but test after adding each to make sure that they do not start to interfere again.
If the HP fax product still cannot receive a fax after removing other devices, continue with the following steps:
7. If a DSL filter is needed on the telephone line, change the DSL filter and then try to receive a fax. If the HP fax product still cannot receive a fax, proceed to step 8.
8. If a new telephone cord has not been tried, change the telephone cord to a new two-wire telephone cord, and then try to receive a fax again.
Try to receive a fax.
if it does not resolve then perform the following steps
1. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the product.
2. Wait for 20 seconds, and then press and hold # and 6 on the product Control Panel.
3. Connect the power cord to the back of the product and then release the buttons when the product turns on.
4. The product resets to factory defaults.
Try to receive a fax.
As a last step, test in another location by following the steps below:
If possible, move the HP fax product to another location with a separate telephone line (another house for instance).
Try to receive a fax at that location, and if you are able to receive faxes from the changed location, then your telephone line should be tested.
If it resolves well and good if it does not then service the printer

Do I need to add a phone line if I buy a fax machine?

No ... you do not need a separate line. When you set your fax up, it will ask you if you have a dedicated line (no) or if you are sharing a line (yes) and how many rings do you want to have before the FAX answers.

I hope this answers your question

Use the HP Fax Test
The telephone number for this service is 1-888-HPFaxme (1-888-473-2963). The fax service receives faxes and returns faxes within 5 to 7 minutes to the number contained in the fax header. Solution two: Run a fax diagnostic test
  1. Load plain white paper into the input tray.
  2. Press the Setup button (c01669474.gif ) on the product control panel.
  3. Press the right arrow (c01669475.gif ) to select Tools , and then press OK .
  4. On the Tools menu, press the right arrow (c01669475.gif ) to select Run Fax Test , and then press OK . The fax diagnostic test prints.
Solution three: Check the telephone line and change the HP fax settings Step one: Test the telephone line
  1. Disconnect the telephone cord from the back of the HP fax product.
  2. Figure 1: Two-wire telephone cord c01501963.gif
  3. Pick up the handset of the telephone and check for a dial tone.
  4. On the single-line telephone, dial the fax number of the receiving fax machine.

  5. Hang up the single-line telephone.
  6. Use a second telephone line or a cellular telephone to call the telephone number assigned to the HP fax product.
Step two: Change the HP fax settings
  1. Connect phone line into line 1
  2. Press the Setup button (c01669474.gif ) on the product control panel.
  3. Press the right arrow (c01669475.gif ) to select Basic Fax Setup or Advanced Fax Setup , and then press the right arrow (c01669475.gif ) again to change the menu option settings to the settings listed in the following table. Advanced Fax Setup Answer Ring Pattern All Rings
  4. Use the HP Fax Test Service to try to send and receive a fax.
If the HP fax product still cannot send or receive a fax, continue to the next solution. Solution four: Check VoIP digital telephone line Using a VoIP telephone service can cause faxing to fail because fax transmissions are sensitive to the timing of the signals used to transmit the fax. If using a VoIP digital line is necessary, changing the Fax Speed Adjustment setting to Medium might improve the ability to send a fax over a VoIP telephone line. Use these steps to change the fax speed adjustment to a lower speed.
  1. Press the Setup button (c01669474.gif ) on the product control panel.
  2. Press the right arrow (c01669475.gif ) to select Advanced Fax Setup , and then press OK .
  3. Press the right arrow (c01669475.gif ) to select Fax Speed , and then press OK .
  4. Press the right arrow (c01669475.gif ) to select Medium , and then press OK .
  5. Use the HP Fax Test Service to try to send and receive a fax

Got new hp elite m9402f computer but new hp fax doesnt answer

hi there,

initially you have to check and correct this few settings.

To receive a fax manually

1. Make sure the device is turned on and you have paper loaded in the main tray.

2. Remove any originals from the document feeder tray.

3. Set the Rings to Answer setting to a high number to allow you to answer the
incoming call before the device answers. Or, turn off the Auto Answer setting so
that the device does not automatically answer incoming calls.

4. If you are currently on the phone with the sender, instruct the sender to press Start on their fax machine.

5. When you hear fax tones from a sending fax machine, do the following:

a. Press the left arrow or the right arrow to select Fax B&W or Color fax.
b. Press Start.
c. After the device begins to receive the fax, you can hang up the phone or remain on the line. The phone line is silent during fax transmission.

Hope this initial info helps you.
