Try this instead:
Download the Sansa Recovery Tool from the Sansa website.
Format - Erases Everything: Connect your Sansa player to the computer and open Windows Media Player. Click on the Sync tab. Pull down the drop down menu underneath the Sync tab by moving your cursor over the Sync tab and left clicking on the little black arrow underneath the Sync tab. Highlight "Sansa 1GB" (wording may vary slightly), and then select "Format." - this should erase everything.
Firmware Upgrade- Erases Everything: Get the latest firmware upgrade from Sansa - it updates the firmware and erases every song in the player all at once. Note: this method doesn't work if already have the latest firmware. Go to this website and click "Firmware Updater" to find out: http://www.sandisk.com/Retail/DriverDownloads.aspx

No USB mode on my sansa e260

I think this is what you are asking. Forgive me if I didn't understand the question correctly.

Switch on the mp3 player. Select "Settings", scroll to "USB Mode" and make sure that "MSC", not "MTP" is selected.

When you next plug in the USB connector, your PC should recognize the Sansa as a standard USB device.

I have Windows Vista and it says that it can't support the sansa e260

I would place the e260 in MSC mode first, as Vista should support this Sansa.
Unplug the player, then from the e260 do the following:
go to Settings, then choose System Settings then USB Mode & select MSC. Next, connect the E260, Vista should now see the player properly.

How do you change your microSD USB mode to MSC (in order to get MP3 players to recognize music files?)

Go to the main menu of the Sansa --> Settings --> USB Mode --> Change from MTP to MSC.

Sansa e260 will not connect to computer

Unplug the Sansa from the computer. Turn it off. Hold in the REC button. Reconnect the Sansa to the computer while holding in the REC button. After 10-15 seconds of continuing to hold in the REC button, a window should pop up saying "Found New Hardware Wizard." Complete the Wizard.

Problem with sansa e260

It is because the e260 is not in MSC mode (where it looks to the computer like a hard disk).

Try this, this will temporarily set your e260 into MSC mode. Then download and install the firmware as per instructions (or use the Sansa Updater software also available on the Sansa site). This will then let you see a menu item to switch to MSC mode.

MSC mode instructions:
  1. Turn on the e200 v2
  2. Put the device in Hold (move Hold button until orange is showing)
  3. Press and hold the Left Button
  4. Plug the 30 pin connector into the device (be sure the USB is plugged into the computer)
  5. Wait for the e200 drive(s) to show up
  6. Follow instructions below and drag files to the e200 drive

Sansa e260 says connected but device not recognized

I agree with the above suggestion. Try setting the USB Mode under "Settings" on "MSC" on the Sansa. My computer would not recognize the e260 when the mode was set to "MTP"; works fine on "MSC".
