We had similar problem on our Z5. It turned out to be the two prongs at the end of the tray that were shorted out with dirty water. After carefully cleaning the whole contact area of the tray, the message was cleared. I would also inspect the machine itself where the prongs go in. Use a flashlight to ensure there is nothing causing the tray to misalign with the contacts. Somtimes used grounds gets stuck there and lifts the tray a bit.

As many folks have suggest, it is the contacts on the tray that must trigger the system to end the "Empty Tray" message that you get. Try cleaning and then drying the contacts, as they can be easily removed with a small screwdriver or if you are very careful with a pointy knife. If that does not work, try the following: remove the tray and place the bottom part of the tray under cold running water. the the bottom of the tray cold, as well as the contacts, not just the contacts. After several minutes of cooling under the water, dry the contacts and plastic, re-assembly the tray and bin and replace it in the Z5. This worked for me after I called customer service. The service guy told me that the system gets overheated and that can be the problem in addition to dirty contacts. Another solution is to unplug the Z5 and allow it to sit for 30 min to reset the computer board and also cool off. Good luck, as the Z5 is an awesome coffee machine
BIG THANX Mr. Stahl cooling down the tray did the magic
The contacts at the end of the tray are the answer for either reason laid out in the two previous reasons.
The manufacturer recommends, and a proper service engineer should too, that the tray never gets emptied over the short back end were the contacts are but tipped sideways to empty over the long side edge of the tray. This avoids any problems of this kind.
