I have an older model Hitachi 32" ultravision CRT tv. the video just collapsed into a thin horizontal line (about 1/4"). Video is fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The vertical circuit gets too hot and burns out the a trace in the circuit board. It is a large, component to the circuitry with a heat sink and it is OBVIOUS to find. (char marks). If you know how to discharge a tube television, then you can bypass the trace with a piece of wire :P Note: I had to fix this problem twice, first time the fix was to just re-solder it, but it broke again a year later. After that the whole trace burned out and I just bypassed it with a piece of wire. It has worked ever since! (4 years and counting)

TURN IT OFF AND DO NOT TRY TO USE---if a thin line left to right in middle of screen it is vertical problem---the set should shut down but even seconds count here--this can burn a mark on all three picture tubes instantly and it is permanent.

Problem if small line left to right in vertical circuit.

Let me know what you know and I will try to help--I know these sets very well.

Screen has gone grey and has fine horizontal lines on entire screen. Blue screen is out.

Either the screen voltage to picture tube is more than normal, or the video processor IC has damaged. There is an other possibility that there is no voltage at the video output card, plugged on to the neck of the picture tube. Anyway, your set need a through checkup, and the work is somewhat skilled one. Just check this site. Soemtimes you might get some details about this fault. The fault is called vertical retrace lines. Thin horizontal lines all across the screen with an inch apart. One among the posts published in the following site have details about this fault.
Visit the site named 'Electro-help' for more details. Click this link. View it in "Timeslide" or "Flipcard" option, which can be selected from the drop down box menu by the [Sidebar] tag, at the top left corner of the display window. It will make search easy. I have an older Hitachi 36'' Ultrvision TV. It has worked fine for years up until resently. The problem that I am having is I can not get the direct TV signal to come in. The out from the Direct TV box...

Sounds like you have something in the wrong setting that won't allow the signal to get through. If the video 1 line works OK but regular input will not work, that is almost certainly the problem. I would try just unplugging it (turning it off is not the same thing), let it reset for a few minutes; then plug it back up and see if it will reset by itself. hope this helps.

Many thin black horizontal lines on my Hitachi Ultravision 50" TV

Good Day, LDS also;
You may have a poor seated cable connector. Unplug TV from A/C, remove back look for a large black connector. It connects between the Main Digital Module and the Drive PWB. Re-insert both ends several times to make better contact, use contact cleaner if have but not always needed. Good Luck, big IRISH.

Black display with a horizontal white line in the middle.

Middle going across the screen from left to right??
This unit is plagued with bad solder connections in the comb filter board and flatpack underneath the comb filter board. These connections can cause any odd number of problems in video display. If it is that it's not expensive - virtually no parts. If it's a single line across the screen could also be the vertical circuit involved.
My suggestion is to have it estimated at a reputable shop and take it to them rather than the more expensive pu/del charges.
If you would like go to http://www.nesda.com/locator/state_search.php and locate a servicer from there. Kinda like going to the AMA to find a doctor...
Hope this helps!

Hitachi Ultravision Digital TV dark picture

Looks like

1. A Cold solder in the Video Output stage power supply.

2. A bad Electrolytic Capacitor in the above Video Output stage.

I generally do not waste time in attempting to locate faulty capacitors. There will be only 6-8 pf them in the above stage / section,m and the klot of them would collectivelyt not cost more than 3-4 $ equivalent, in india. Just blindly replace the lot, and the set is ready in 30 mins.

Dunno how much they will cost in your country. Try to look for a 100mfd, 160V Capacitor. Close your eyes and replace. generally does the trick.
