If you want to, you can put in the Epi pick-ups. But if you want a real powerful and rich sound, find the Seymore Duncan "Pearly Gates" pickup. It was designed by Duncan and Billy Gibbs of ZZ Top. I have one on my American-made Fender "Lonestar" Stratocaster. It is awesome: great tone, sweet or heavy, great harmonics, etc. Listen to ZZ Top's "Rough Boy" on "Afterburner". You'll get the idea, especially if you play lead.

Yes, the pickups can be changed.
However; In my opinion this is not worth it. Pick up a pair of aftermarket pickups for a better sound that will fit your playing style.

Sorry I misread the queston, and the ealy Gates" pickup wa an attempt by Seyour Duncan to replicate Billy Gibbon's '57 Les Paul.
