I don't have a Nikon, but my guess would be that the clock battery is getting low and needs changing, unable to maintain the clock settings.
If you run it by a camera shop, they should have one.
Good luck, and hope this helps.

Nikon D 80 digital Camera

The ERR message is not a good thing. Read page 132 of the D80 Manual. Also, try a factory reset found on page 129 of the manual. On the left side of the camera is the terminal cover, inside below the USB connector is the reset switch. If that does not work call Nikon digital 1-800-645-6689.

Purchased the D90 with 18-105 kit lens yesterday. Took it home started playing with it and after abt 5 clicks err came up on the screen. Consulted the manual talked about shutter release but if the problem...

According to and directly from Nikon:

When you see Err on the control panel, LCD monitor or viewfinder of your digital camera it refers to a camera malfunction. Try the following:
  1. Remove all accessories from the camera.
  2. Install a freshly charged battery into the camera.
  3. If your Nikon camera offers resets such as the two-button reset or a hardware reset please follow those instructions provided in the product manual.
If these steps do not resolve the Err message we recommend having a Nikon Authorized Repair Technician evaluate the Nikon camera. Click here for repair information.

Err 999

You can reset the camera 2 ways... soft reset is to remove and replace the battery. To hard reset, there is a microswitch on the bottom of the camera body opposite from the battery compartment. Youll have to reset the camera's clock if you do this. If it still doesnt work, have a Nikon authorized camera shop look at it.

Nikon D70 Err

Sounds like the shutter is sticking. This could be due to damage or just need cleaning. This probably means that you need to get the camera professionally serviced/fixed as shutters are extremely delicate.
