It is a magnet that floats (onnects like a reed switch inside the machine)
if it doesn't float there is the problem read switch does not pick up telling the machine ther is no water in the container
it can stick to the container and doesn't float
bad design
try hot water and wash away the film that could be holding it down
might work for you

Lucky for you the problem probably doesn't lie with the machine but the water tank. Inside the tank there is a flow meter (that little black box). That black box contains a pc board that connects to the machine to tell it how much water is currently available. If that piece does not work properly and the flow meter does not rise (inside, you can't really see it) when water is put into the tank, your machine will think there is not water available to make espresso. Try replacing the tank first then go from there.

The water tank is full, however the machine is asking to fill the tank

There is usually some sort of sensor to determine if the tank is full or empty. Some use a float mechanism, some have a electronic beam of some description. Have a look where the tank goes into the machine and make sure everything is clean.

How do we get past a message to remove/ refill the water tank?

ChoccyBar,

THANK YOU. You're answer was so helpful. I have the XP7230 and all of the sudden had exact same problem, machine wouldn't not register a full tank. After reading this I checked the floating piece and saw that it was not floating with a full tank like it is supposed to. Had to obstruct it to keep it afloat as well, and voila, it worked.

Ahh... what a relief to have my machine working again. Coffee has never tasted so good.

Why does my water container fill up even though my machine is plumbed in?

This looks like a fault. The plastic tank has two reed switches that measure 'tank empty' and 'tank half full'. When the tank is empty the inlet solenoids (there are 2 for safety) open and water enters the tank but not so much to fill the tank to the half way level. In normal operation the level water in the tank will drop and then more water is allowed in. In your case it appears the 'half full' reed switch is being activated because the solenoids are not closing off properly and water is leaking in and filling the tank. If you do not empty it then eventually it will fill and leak into the leak. The problem can be caused by either low water pressure (below 145 psi) or sticky solenoid. If is the solenoid then the Miele solution will be to replace both solenoids. Alternately you may be able to remove, take apart and clean. Also check that you have a mesh filter at connection to tap. Also you can temporarily fix the problem by turning off the water at the tap and re-programming machine to 'turn off' the plumed water line. regards

Fill water tank

There should be a float in the tank that detects the water level or a sensor i would try to locate that and maybe move it or shake on the tank to losen up the float.

The machine says fill watertank. ventilate. the

Open the hot water valve, and run about a cup of water, this will engage the pump and fill the circuit.
