I'm sure a number of things can cause this problem but in my case it happened after I changed a burned out light. and even though the lamps i installed fit fine they were not the right. been a while now but I think its just a difference of a letter. hope this helps
This a firewire drive and needs to plugged into a firewire port to spin up. If you do not have a firewire port on your computer (most PC's don't) it will not work. I don't believe a firewire to USB connector will pass enough power to the drive to spin it up.
The exact same thing happened to me... my lights don't flicker but my A/C is having the same exact issues.... if you find out what happened please let me know as well.

it is a known issue that these particular drives sometimes don't get recognized by the Operating System, after coming out of Sleep, Stand By, or Hibernation.
Simply try to disconnect and reconnect the drive again in the USB port,
if this doesn't work then,
Disconnect it from the USB and connect it to the Firewire.
if this doesn't work then,
Restart the computer.
It should solve the problem.
