Pcl542r, powers up pip image works menu images ok, no picture on the main scree. fed in images from dvd player worked on pip not on main screen

  • Anonymous Sep 21, 2010

Switching inputs on the remote does not work, I tried that as well as a number of other fixes per the trouble shooting guide as well. This appears to be some type of internal circuitry issue, almost as if there is a short. Image appears on screen at random time then goes to black and all you hear is the audio. It held an image for the first time recently for a while but image was a little unsettled and had faint red lines around images. Turned on again today and image came up then immediately staticed out and went black, with only audio.

Very strange, and if you disable PIP altogether, you get no image? That would only mean to me that your primary "image" is using the incorrect input.... switch the inputs on the primary image by using the INPUT or SOURCE button on your remote. It should be something similar to that. You should be able to cycle through the inputs on the TV to get a picture from all the different inputs on the back of the TV....

Thanks
Tim

Won't play in color

If set it is hooked to works ok then look in the DVD player menu (this problem is listed under DVD players) for a setting that will make picture have no color (perfect black and white image).

If no, you may have a circuit problem in the unit and unless it is an expensive and newer one---replace the entire player.

Try resoldering the vertica IC. Very common problem. When vertical drops out the CRTs go into blanking ( shutdown no picture) but the menu and on screen displays will still work. Resoldering the IC will usually solve the issue.

Check if it has a scrambled image on all sources ie - DVD- VCR - cable/satellite box. Since the PIP is normal it sounds like the signal source is bad.

How does PIP work ? where does the signal come from for the second picture ?

PIP uses the signal from a second tuner to insert a small or split-screen image on the main image. Some TVs have two tuners but most PIP applications need a signal from a VCR tape or tuner (tuner must be digital since 6/12), a DTV box, or a cable box for TV programs. A DVD player can also provide a signal for PIP if a DVD is playing. However some TVs will not allow PIP if the signal inputs are through the HDMI ports.

How can I adjust images to dvd?

There are two ways. One is the old way and the other by computer.
First the old way, you can get a video processor/mixer. These vary in price depending on how much you want to improve the image or add things or even do tricks. The video player ouput is fed into the box and the output to TV so you can see the effect the box has on the picture. Most will improve signal, colour and stop picture rolls and jump (they won't deal with macrovision). Some have sound controls too! They were used a lot for camcorder work in the past. So you might get one cheap on E-Bay.
And the new way is to connect the video to your PC and you can get software to digitally remaster the video, which it will then output to a DVD recorder. If you have a PC that can handle the big video files, it's more economic and you will get heaps better images.
