D80-viewer and display stay black, the flash

If your camera got moisture inside and you turned it on before it had a chance to completely dry (usually takes several days) you may have caused a short circuit.

Hightlight message on Nikon D80

Highlight is just the info mode, there are several info modes including Basic file info, Shooting Info and RGB histogram, just press the round controller in the up or down direction to change between them in playback mode. Highlight will flash black anywhere there is pure white in an image.
Try resetting the camera by pressing the 2 buttons with green dots (on top of the camera near the shutter release) holding them for a few seconds.

Nikon D80 using Bower AF 724AFN

I also purchased a Bower 724AFN to use with my D80, and experience the same problems. Received confirmation from Nikon that this flash unit is not compatible with the camera. I then purchased an SB-600 flash, and haven't looked back. It's worth the extra money for this high quality unit; fully compatible, and compliments the TTL features of the D80. I'll never deviate from original Nikon accessories again.

I purchased a d80 recently and took about 2,000 shots at an outdoor music festival virtually 90% of them came out with poor image quality, i was shooting in "fine" mode and alternated my settings...

Hey mcgeedds,
What you’re seeing is probably what is called digital noise. At low levels of light the sensor in the camera that records the image shares data from one pixel to the ones adjacent to it which causes digital noise. The way to fix this is either make sure your noise reduction setting is turned on, or get a powerful off camera flash that has the power and coverage capabilities to light the subject at the distance you are from your subject. Noise reduction on average should double your exposure time requiring you to use a tripod in most cases. Also pay attention to your iso setting if it is too high this can also cause digital noise in your images. I almost never shoot with a higher iso that 400. I hope this helps.

Sincerely,
Allan
