Unless the motor data plate is missing the wiring diagram for all century / a.o. smith motors is on the motor data plate.

This is a typical compressor motor connection diagram but since you did not include the motor number you may want to see if it is similar to your motor connection.

The difference between 120V and 220V connection is done via terminals 4, 5 and 6.

Note closely the position of the MOTOR white, brown and red wires. for each configuration.

I just installed Hayward 1.5HP inground and it tells me that if i use the 115v to use a 30 amp breaker - and when i left the 230V button positioning inside the back of the pump and connected with a 14 ...
double the amps, 230 runs cooler (my fav) . 1.5 is 9.6 amps at 230 volt. you will need to set the motor to run on on the lower voltage this is why you are having problems.. also the motor is thermally protected . this why it will run for awhile and shot off .. remember to prime the pump after any pump repair !!!! . jay the pool pump repair guy in longwood florida

Rewiring mootor from 230v down to 115v

However, I believe that this motor will be more efficient at 230v depending on load conditions. At 115v this motor will draw more amps and tend to run hot, but situation rules. Enjoy
