I have a Genarac 7500 watt portable generator. When the power cord is plugged in to 220 AC outlet on the generator and the other end is plugged into my transfer switch the power at my house appears to be only getting 110 AC. Some 110volt things in the house work but not all and nothing 220 volts works as it did before. I realize with only 8000 watts the system has to be managed but in this case even one 220 AC doesn't work when there is no others demands.

Hello Jpaisley...

Your question on 110 - & 220 voltage circuits
on June 17... When I first started on your answer...
EVERYWHERE in the USA was after noon
(now not eastern or Central... are past midnight).

It is still 6/16/2017 here in CALIFORNIA... So I am
concerned that I might be giving BAD ADVICE.

The USA National Electric Code
allows for ALTERNATE power sources to be
attached to A GRID powered system ONLY
IF that system (in your case 7.5KW GENERAC)
is completely separated from the utility
GRID by the YOUR TRANSFER SWITCH...

The FACT THAT both of your Hot sides are not
PRESENT in your house... means there is a
possibility that LETHAL VOLTAGE could be
getting past your TRANSFER SWITCH...

A FAR GREATER CONCERN than your 220 volt
appliances... WHICH SHOULD BE WORKING.

YOU should get some one who knows their way around
a volt meter to test the outputs of your Generac... AT
YOUR GENERAC... and then step it methodically
back to each point... through EACH cord & plug.

This would be the perfect APPLICATION for a tone
tracer... (No POWER need be applied (see below)).
((FACT: best tone tracing requires OPEN circuits)).

HOPEFULLY one of your HOT WIRES is simply
not wired as opposed to the VERY DANGEROUS
CROSS-WIRED.

My experience says it is incorrectly wired in the
connecting cords...!!

Tone tracer (I use Klein only because nothing else was
available... way back when )

SOURCE: Bought new XP8000e

Most people don't buy a transfer switch because they cost almost as much as the generator. Lowe's sells a very inexpensive one that will work for most people. It is made by GE and costs $92. Lowe's Item #: 42210 Model: TM860S. Good for 60 amps and 8 circuits. It takes standard GE half size breakers but includes the 60 amp main breakers (which are also standard but make use of a novel device that ensures you can't send power back up the pole). It's a great little design and if a breaker ever fails, you can get a replacement at Lowe's or Home Depot.

SOURCE: Generac Guardian 15kW Generator

That sounds just about right, if the relay contacts get welded together it sometimes takes out the driver on the printed circuit board. As you found out, 12vdc from 23 to 194 makes the transfer switch move to the Generator position, relay not energized makes the ATS move to the Normal position.

You can make a nice test function by installing a 10 amp contact switch in series with either the N1 or N2 terminals. When the switch is open the generator thinks the Normal power has failed.

SOURCE: Generac 4456 does not start on power loss

I install and work on these everyday. If you hooked up the transfer switch you probable have a control wire wrong. check the utility power sense wire. That lets it no when to start in auto. it could be a relay or fuses. or a control board.

SOURCE: Generator Transfer Problem

There isn't much you can do with servicing the generator set or transfer switch unless you've got lots of experience in diagnoising semi-conductors and electronic components.

Depending on the age of the system, it would be benificial to have a qualified service tech take a look at it.

As an electrician, I've installed several back up generator sets in homes for customers and have had a few of these automatic transfer switches with intermittent operation issues. Sometimes it's the switch and other times it's the Generator that is causing the problems.

Hope this helps, and best regards!

How much is a used coleman vertex 7500 portable generator.how can i know if its in g ood condition

Midwest USA... A working generator in good running condition should sell for around $0.05 a watt +-, so 7500x0.05= $375. Excellent condition add a penny. NOS add another penny.

A working generator in poor condition 3 cents/watt.

A generator that doesnt work, i.e. engine doesn't run or engine runs but no electrical power is $0 to $50. Repair costs of some generators cost more than a new one.

As for operational status, the typical shop vacuum makes a handy load tester. The shop vac load along with a "Kill A Watt" power monitor will provide an independent voltage and frequency analysis.

Be sure to plug the vacuum into every outlet and if any outlet doesn't work consider the unit non-working.

Have a tanka-kogyo generator deg-600 with no manual. It has two plug type female outlets. can you confirm the outlet capacity.

The capacity will be on a label on the generator portion..not the engine It will say how many watts the generator will produce.

How to test the electrical system of the generator for free

Ez test to determine if stator wiring is ok. This test works on generators that have two sets of 115v plugs and 220v plug. Use a 12v, 1amp ac power supply ( smaller ac power supply should work ok ). With generator not running, apply 12v to one of the 115v outlet plugs. Now verify 12v output voltage with meter at another 115v outlet on generator. Also verify that there is about twice the voltage at the 220 v outlet plug (should be about 20v - 24v) . If the adjoining 115 v outlet plug has no output or very little voltage or if the 220 volt plug has no output, most likely stator is damaged or breaker is off. If the stator is shorted voltage reading will be very low and power supply will heat up. If stator is open, there will be no voltage at second 115v plug or 220 v plug. If voltage is ok at the other outlet plugs as per test above then most likely problem is with voltage regulator, or brushes not making contact or armature winding open or just needs to be energized. Unplug the 12v power supply after test to prevent it from overheating. Most generators have two 115v windings that together power the 220v plug. When you energize one of the windings with the 12v power supply, the second 115v winding will be energized also and give you a voltage reading about equal to 12v. You will not damage the generator with this small voltage being input thru the plug. Good luck

Coleman generator #PM0497000.02 generator starts well and runs smoothly, yet I have no electrical output. I have purchased replacement brush modules, but am unsure as how to re-excite the unit. The...

You have to get a cord that has a plug on on it. On the other end of the cord strip the insulation off the ends of the wire about an inch. It would be easier if you put small clamps on the stripped ends of the wire. Connect the black wire to plus on a car battery and white to negative. Start the generator and plug the cord in to a outlet on the generator just for a second and take the plug out. The generator should now be producing electrical current. If not there is something burned out internally.

Converting the power to genertor

You should not have to switch between battery and generator, unless you are trying to use an inverter as well. Batteries are 12vdc, typically run lighting, water pump, furnace, fridge controls. Generator powers ac, microwave, television, and anything else that plugs into a 120vac wall outlet. Inverter may also run select loads, and possibly dedicated wall outlets, but not AC, fridge, or microwave (usually).

Most RVs / Motorhomes now have automatic transfer switches that will switch between the generator, shorepower, and possibly an inverter. Your coach is made during an era of transition from manual transfer switch (in form of heavy duty electrical outlet near shore power cord) and the automatic transfer switch.

There is no specific place where a transfer switch or generator receptacle are mounted on an RV. There are no rules or regulations tha cover this as far as I know. Your RV may also have an EMS (Energy Management System) that will control the transfer switch as well. EMS panels are typically located above the refrigerator or above driver / passenger seats in overhead compartment.

The power is out because of Hurricane Gustav. I have a 6500 watt portable generator and would like to use our clothes dryer which has a 220 volt requirement. Is that possible, and is there a special...

Dryers require a 40A circuit breaker to handle the current. According to Ohms Law: Watts = Volts * Amps. Therefore, you require a power capacity of 220V * 40A in order to safely run the dryer, which is 8800 Watts. This means your generator does not have enough capacity to run the dryer. If we consider the full power of your generator at 6500 Watts, this only allows for 29.5A, which is not enough to run your dryer.

If it WAS possible, you would need to ensure that you ran a 30A heavy extension cord with the correct 220V plugs and receptacles on the end. This would require at least 10gauge 3-conductor wire, which is quite expensive.

However, that point is moot, since your generator does not have the capacity to run your dryer. You could try it, but I rather suspect that the dryer will trip the 30A breaker on the genset circuit. If you do try it, make sure you run a 10-gauge, 30A extension cord or you could have a fire.
