Connection with Netopia Cayman 3347w is very slow and becoming unbearable

We are using the Netopia to connect to the Web in our family but with the actual applications available on the net it is becoming far too slow.
When making a new connection the speed indicated is 11 Mbps but soon after that slows down to 1 Mbps (probably even slower but the speed indicated by the icon seems to have a minimum of 1 Mbps).
This is no longer usable. Is this problem known and what can be done about this?
Ouw telco providor is Belgacom and is offering an ADSL-connection which should do fine. Many thx in advance.

Explaining an opinion on DSL's speed doesnt help fix a problem. Not to mention the fact that DSL is on a digital subsciber line, your own phone number, not the neighbors, you have it backwards, its cable that can have its speed impaired if all your neighbors go on.

Anyway, I am an expert with netopias. I trouble shoot them all day long on people's DSL connections. The symtopms that MacWyb is describing sounds like he has degregation of service that needs to be fixed by maintenance. They can do whats called a rip and rebuild, where they take off the virtual circuit and virtual path (vp and vc) and then build it right back, this clears this type of problem up quite often. It would also be a loose wire at the D-mark, the gray box on the side of your house, thats happened to me twice now. Or, It could be you're on a redback that has too many customers assigned to it, maintenance, if this is the case, would have to move your circuit, assign it to antoher redback, or brass router, whatever they're on.

In anycase, It means a call in to technical support with your ISP. They will create a trouble ticket to look at it for you.

This is all taking for granted you dont have a buzz on your phone (which would make it a telco issue, a call to your local phone company to fix the line), and that you have all your DSL filters installed on every phone in the house, including fax machines, etc.

Do you mean the wifi connection between your computer and router is what's slowing and not the actual DSL connection between your router and your ISP? If that's the case it could be caused by interference from another router nearby using the same wifi channel. If so you should be able to change the channel in the System Configuration menu -> Wireless LAN configuration. Change it to a distant value from whatever it's at now and see if that helps. If that's not the case then spincycleus' solution is probably the best way to go.

These are normal problems of dsl i made a little help site here on my page so people could understand differences of dsl and cable
hope this helps some

DsL Problems in my opinion:

DsL is a glorified phone connection its not smooth and is always in a state of flaux along with your neighbors there neighbors so on and so forth
technecoly i would run cable connection that does not flaux with neighbors always have a strong signal and wont interfere with your videos
DsL is slow as 58 bit data fax modem i found it a waist of money and time waiting for system to play catch up
now if you want to play videos with out interupt turn off cable dsl modem this will bring function back to normal in video mode
your comps fine its just your service provider

You reset the router. that means router is set on factory default.settings has been changed now that's why connection manager is not responding properly. Now you have the run setup CD and set the router again.

Sounds like a firewall issue on the computer that you are trying to RDP/VPN from, or possibly that these services have not been allowed through the routers firewall.

Log on to the routers web configuration page, and see if there is the option to allow these services through.

The red light under "internet" is on instead of green. We show connected on our pc, but when we try to connect to the internet we cannot get a connection?

Turn the router off, unplug it completely for 10 - 15 mins, then replug and turn on. If the problem is still present, press the reset button (small small hole, may require a needle) for 5 - 10 seconds if needed then follow the first step.

Unable to go online with WPA-PSK enabled

What is the operating system on the computrer ?
If it is Windows XP Sp1 then it will not support the WPA.
You can change the security to WEP.
Or you can update the Operating system to XP- SP2
Make sure that you are using the correct password while connecting to the network

Netopia Gateway has internet connection,can ping,but no web pages

Connect directly to your ISP by what ever method. Get Network Magic from Cisco. Download the free evaluation copy and run it. Reintroduce your router and let Network Magic help you solve the trouble. It may be that your firewall is too tight.

Can't find wep key

Hello,
With each new router comes a new WEP KEY by default this could be found normally on the back of the router/access point near the bar code it should have something like this:
SSID: XXXXXXXX WEP KEY: XXXXXXX
If you don't find this sticker or don't have it just reset the router or connect by cable go to the web interface and copy or change the WEP Key there defined.

Bought used modem and don t have user name and passord

on the back panel you will find reset button. press and hold for 20sec. So your router will get back defaul settings.

WHAT ARE THE STEPS TO HOOKING UP MY WIRELESS ROUTER TO MY NETOPIA ROUTER - RIGHT NOW NETOPIA IS BEING FED BY MY CABLE MODEM

the cable modem should be giving the netopia an ip address

go inside the netopia by opening Internet Explorer and type 192.168.1.254

a little window will pop open

the username is admin, the password is the serial number on the bottom of the netopia

once in, click on configure, lan, then wireless at the bottom

make sure the wireless box is checked

name your network (SSID its called) like randy578

then click advanced if you want to enable wireless security encryption, your key to get online securely

click submit underneath it

clike the yellow triangle up at the top right

click save and restart

in like 2-3 minutes, click the wireless connection icon by your clock

connect to randy578 network

you should now be online
