Nikon D40 will not flash

I have a new (May7,2008) Nikon D40. The flash worked initially but it will no longer flash. It pops up on Auto but does not flash. While it is up when I press to focus I get a cliking noise but no flash when I take the picture. In P mode the viewfinder flash is flashing?

I had the same problem and it drove me nuts. Thankfully, out of some mistake, I figured out what was wrong; better yet, how to fix the problem. To get my Nikon D40x to flash I: Turn off the camera; set it to AUTO; turn on the camera, while still on AUTO, and push the 'take picture' button into the first position. The built-in camera should have popped up. It works for me; see if it works for you. Aloha

you refered to a flash tube?

Whenever i press the shutter button all i get is a click sound from the mechanism that holds the build-in flash down when the camera is not in use. The little hook thing moves really fast but there is no flashing although the flash is up.

    D40 Pop up flash
I've encountered the same no-firing problem with my D40 flash. I've ben through all modes of metering and firing and all modes of flash and gone to reset to revert to default settings - all to no avail. The camera does however trigger and meter an accessory flash in the approved way. Conclusion the flash unit itself is faulty or there is a dry join in the wiring between cotrols and flash unit itsel. A reapir job is in order and my much loved D40 is just out of warranty. Oh dear.

same thing here. pops but no flash. just think its ridiculous that Nikon wants 180 dollars to fix a flash on an already expensive camera.

The lightning bolt icon in viewfinder blinks when flash is not ready, this can happen if flash doesnt pop up all the way, or if flash strobe tube is bad.

Auto flash wont work

did it pop up automatically or did you pop it manually? if it popped up by itself then the flash unfortunately is probably dead, since on automatic, it won't pop unless it's going to fire. If you popped it manually then - the camera doesn't think that the flash is necessary for the conditions that you're shooting in.

Nikon d40 flash won't fire

Hi,

If it clicks when the flash is already open, it seems there would be a problem with the flash open sensor. The camera thinks the flash is closed, so it tries to open it again and it refuses to fire, because firing in the closed position would blow the bulb.

The D40 flash is a bit different, but if you open it (just unscrew the two little screws in front) you'll recognize the sensor clips. Open and close the flash and see if the make contact when open.

(And DON'T fire the flash when open, or at the very least don't touch anything in there when firing or you'll get zapped.

Goodluck..

Flash not popping up - did i push something?

Make sure you're not shooting on no-flash auto mode. Also, in P, A, and M modes you'll have to press the flash button on the side of the camera by the lens mount in order for the flash to pop up. If it's not popping on regular auto mode, make sure you don't have it disabled in the menu.

Nikon D40 built-in flash...

Hi and thanks for coming to FixYa.

You can set the parameters for the manual flash in the Custom Settings Menu. Select Full to set the manual flash adjustments.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions in a comment.

D70 internal flash not firing

Check if something is preventing the flash to pop up 'fully'. Check for some dust or other particles trapped between the flash and the body. Does the screen say 'Subject is too dark'? If so, the flash has not popped up fully.

Nikon D40 help?!

I assume the lens had the impact. The 18-55 lens has the built-in motors for auto-focus.
Try switching to manual focus (on the lens). If this works, the lens may not auto-focus anymore.
Try it and let me know.
cheers,

If lightning bolt icon is blinking in viewfinder, flash is not ready. Either flash isnt popped up all the way or flash strobe tube is bad.

Nikon D40 - The built in flash will not ppo-up in auto mode. The only time it works is the manual modes. Are there any settings I don't know about. I'm calling it defective and will return it the store.

With the command dial set to "auto", try to take a shot in low light. The flash should pop up automatically. You can't manually pop it up with the flash button in the auto mode. If it won't pop automatically in low light, then it certainly sounds defective.
