Hello.
I recently bought a acer aspire 3680 laptop. Everything was working fine until today. I was just browsing around on my computer when the screen went black. The computer STILL SEEMED TO BE ON. All of the lights were lit up and the laptop was "humming" like normal.
On my home computer I went to acer support, they told me it was a ac adapter problem so I took the following steps:
*complete a 'power reset' of the notebook.*
1. Unplug the ac adapter. Keep ac adapter unplugged.
2. Remove the battery and keep the battery unplugged.
3. Hold the power button down for 15-20 seconds. (Nothing will appear on the display and none of the lights will light up.)
4. Release the power button and plug in the ac adapter ONLY. (Please note that a power indicator light should be lit on the ac adapter when it is plugged in).
5. Normally power on the notebook.
6. If the unit does not power on, remove the ac adapter and insert the battery into the system.
7. Plug the ac adapter back into the system, the battery charging indicator light will light up.
If the battery charging indicator light does not light up, the ac adapter may not be providing proper power to the unit, and may need to be replaced.
After doing all of that, the battery indicator lit up so it wasn't a problem with the ac adapter. I started up my computer, the screen was still black.

if you can hear your fan noise when you start your laptop and cannot see anything on screen, that means your motherboard is faulty and you will have to replace your motherboard
Once you replace your motherboard, your acer aspire will be fine again Thanks
Sounds like you have gotten stuck in presentation mode. Hold down the function Key (Fn) its blue, and then hit the (F5) key once. If the screen doesn't come back, press both again.
Try unplugging the computer from the power supply,,and remove the battery,,,then replace battery and plug into power supply again,,,and try to restart.
I am assuming that you have tried switching from external monitor output and local monitor. There should be a hot key on the keyboard to switch it. Also, try looking to make sure the driver for the display is up to date. I f it was update recently try rolling the driver back. If you need help with doing any of this post a comment. Hope this has helped some.
Check Acer's website for a BIOS update. I've seen a LOT of laptop's screen issues been related to the power saving settings in the BIOS. Sometimes screens going black very fast and not working properly can be caused by that.
The Power Inverter could also be the problem which you wouldn't be able to repair yourself. If you purchased it at Best Buy you can take it to them and they could get that fixed for you (at a charge if there is no warranty with that).
Hi,
Have you checked The Settings in The Bios.
Your laptop May be set As NTSC Or PAL, displaying on A Different format tv set ?
Try An external Monitor, Or the TV Out if applicable.
If these work in Colour rather than monochrome ( Black And White ) then the fault lies with your svga output on the laptop.
Hi, could be anything to do with video. Might be the on board video card or its memory. It is also possible that your display lost its back lite and you just can see the display. Try turning the laptop on normally and let it run for a while. Try tilting the display left right up down as if trying to gaze at the inside of the display. If you can see faint traces of your desktop then it is definitely the back lite, if none then something else is at fault. Either way you will have to bring it back for repairs or replacement.
You can also try checking the memory by sliding out the panel cover at the bottom of the casing. There might be a screw or two locking the cover panel in place. Try wiggling the memory a bit, might have loosen up somehow.
If still a no go, then perhaps you're really better off sending it back for repairs/replacement.
Hope this works out for you. Pls post again how things turn up. Good luck and kind regards.
