My needle was hitting the metal casing for the bobbin under the metal plate. I have a new needle and when I remove the bobbin it doesn't have the same problem, just when the lower bobbin is in.

  • Anonymous Sep 12, 2010

The needle is in correctly and, at least as far as the instructions say, the bobbin seems to be. So, I don't know how I am placing the Bobbin incorrectly. The needle goes where it should when the Bobbin is removed. How should I adjust the bobbin?

The most common reason for this is that the bobbin case is inserted the wrong way. There's a slot on the bobbin case. When it's inserted into the machine this should face up. The needle comes down through this slot and picks up the thread from the bobbin. If it's put in the wrong way the needle hits against the case and cannot get through to the thread on the bobbin.
The other possibility is that the new needle doesn't fit properly. It may not be pushed fully up into the machine. Sometimes this can happen if the needle is too thick for the machine or if the screw wasn't loosened enough to allow the needle up fully.

Hi

Be sure the needle is tightly fastened and all the way up into the needle bar. Make sure the bobbin is in right way around and the needle is fully up in the needle clamp, try a new needle — especially if you’ve heard a “clunk” or “ping” of metal hitting metal, like needle hitting a pin, or the presser foot, or the needle plate or the bobbin case…. My bet is on bad or loose needle,
bobbin case slipped out of position or bobbin in backwards or not threaded properly.

However bobbin or bobbin case not inserted correctly; wrong needle system; needle not all the way up in the needle clamp are the first three possibilities . The needle clamp on the sewing machine needs to be opened completely and the needle pushed up in it as high as it will go, then held as the needle clamp is tightened. Put some finger strength into it... you don't have to get the clamp killer tight, but you don't want the needle wiggling loose.
And finally, check the bobbin and bobbin case are in the machine completely.
Once you figure out what's going on, you're going to want to put in a new needle. Needle tips that have hit metal are dead. And make sure you put the needle in right way around -- usually the flat back of the needle goes to the back of the machine. Otherwise the needle can't pick up the bobbin thread and the stitches don't form.

Needle hits plate under bobbin case

If the needle is hitting, install a brand new needle because the old one may be bent or damaged. If it continues to hit with a new needle, then take it in for service.

Needle is hitting the metal under the bobbin carriage and machine won't pick up bobbin thread. Needle is in correctly.

First, try a brand new needle. If it was damaged by the previous activity, then it could be causing both problems.

I have a bernina activa 130 and when you turn the wheel to insert the needle into the fabric the needle breaks. I am not sure what to check.

Check that your needle is centred when straight-stitch is selected and / or that you have the correct stitch-plate fitted. Is the needle breaking because it is hitting the stitch-plate or is it breaking when the needle goes down through the slot/hole in the stitch-plate. If you are sewing zig/zag or patterns, you must have a slotted stitch-plate fitted. If it's breaking when the needle passes below the stitch-plate, then take the bobbin /bobbin case out and the hook/shuttle and see if it still happens. If it does, the timing on your machine may be out and need professional adjustment. If it doesn'y happen after removing just the bobbin case, make sure the bobbin case is being correctly fitted.

Bobbin trouble

Remove the needle plate for better access and try using a seam ripper to gently cut the threads and continue to remove with the tweezers.

The needle plate is the metal plate under the presser foot and is held into place with at least two screws.

The bobbin fits into the bobbin case.

The bobbin case fits into the bobbin shuttle.

Once you get the jam cleaned away, raise the needle to it's highest position and remove the bobbin case and/or replace the bobbin case.

Jamming can cause the machine to be out of time.

If you thead the machine with the presser foot up, have the bobbin inserted into the bobbin case correctly and the stiching is loose and loopy the machine may need to go into the shop for service.

Re-curring loose bobbin case

According to the manual, this is a drop-in bobbin.

If the bobbin case came loose, the needle would probably hit it and brake.

Take the bobbin out.

Turn of the power and remove the needle plate (under the presser foot).

Raise the needle to it's highest position and lift out and reset the bobbin case into the shuttle. This should be in the maintenance section of the manual. The bobbin case should fit snug.

Make sure the thread is feeding from the bobbin, counter-clockwise and through the guides on the bobbin case.

For a rotary bobbin with a metal bobbin case.

Remove the bobbin case. Make sure the thread is feeding clock-wise and through the guide on the side of the bobbin case.

Raise the needle to it's highest position - this puts the hook at the lower left. Left the tab on the back of the bobbin case and slip the bobbin case back into the shuttle with the "arm" straight up. You may have to move the bobbin case a bit to the left or right for it to snap into place.

If the problem persits, take the machine back to the dealer - there should not be a charge for fixing this as it is brand new - keep your receipt and warranty information at hand.

New Problem...I have a Singer CG-550. When I try and sew anything, the needle hits something inside where the bobbin is. The little black casing holing the bobbin keeps moving all over the place, I slip...

On the right of the black bobbin case there are two screws, you can slacken those screws off and move the bobbin case nearer to the guard leaving enough room for the thread to pass through, if the needle is hitting the bottom you may need to retime the machine.

Bobbin holder seems to be broke and needle breaks

Hello,
Here are several things to try.

* When you insert your new needle, make sure it’s positioned correctly (usually with the flat side away from the bobbin, but consult your manual), that it goes all the way into the holder, and that the screw is securely tightened.

If there doesn’t seem to be a problem with your needle, try the following:

* Check your pressure foot and make sure it’s attached securely.

* Change your pressure foot Your pressure foot may be bent, causing your needle to hit it.

* Don’t sew over pins a needle that hits a pin can break. Always remove the pins from your fabric before they reach your needle.

* Don’t pull your fabric as you sew. You could be bending your needle back, causing it to hit your needle plate instead of going into the hole. Just guide your fabric, letting it feed on its own.

* Check your needle plate and make sure it's securely in position.

* Change your needle plate. If you’ve been using a straight stitch needle plate (a plate with a small hole, often used for sewing fine, delicate fabrics), switch to a needle plate with a wider hole.

* Check the position of your needle. Sewing machines with zigzag capability allow you to adjust the position of your needle – right, left, or center. If your needle is not positioned correctly, it may be hitting your needle plate or pressure foot.

* Un-thread your machine and remove your bobbin. Clean any loose thread or lint out of your
bobbin case. Re-thread your machine, reinsert and re-thread your bobbin.

* Change your bobbin. There could be a nick along the edge of your bobbin spool that’s catching your thread as you sew.

Also, before you start to sew a seam, hold the upper and bobbin thread tails. Hold them back
and out of the way as you sew your first couple of stitches. This will keep them from getting
caught in your machine.

I hope these solutions help you.

Needle hitting metal casing .. Singer Futura CE 200

It happend to me aswell , not getting the source of the problem!
Then I noticed that the bobbin casing was out of the original position, take the whole casing out and make sure that when you put it back that the small metal tension loop at the front side on the right is correct, this image you can see in your handbook, (placement of the bobbin casing)

Embroidery hoop gets stuck to the plate and needle breaks

This has happened to me as well. What I usually do is:-
* remove bobbin case and clean out any lint, also under the needle plate, then replace needle plate , bobbin case and the little front cover. replace the bobbin , checking that you have the thread going the correct way.
* replace the needle with a new one of the correct size for the weight of your fabric and the weight of your thread
*remove and rethread the top thread
* check that the stabilizer is of sufficient weight for the density of the design. (You may need to float an extra piece of stabilizer underneath the hoop)
* check also that it is bobbin-fill in your bobbin (it is easy to get it mixed up)
* when stitching out lace, sometimes it helps to hoop the solvy double.

Needle won't move; something stuck/dislodged

Can you remove the bobbin? Sometimes when thread gets bunched up under the lower plate it will force the bobbin out of position. Try taking it out and cleaning any loose thread and lint from the area. Put a couple of drops of oil on the outside of the bobbin case and re-insert it. Make sure you lower the needle and pull the bobbin thread through to the top and back behind the needle before beginning to sew again.
Hope this works!
