Just plugged in my new 12 bottle Danby wine cooler and it hums, LOUDLY. Any idea why?

it might , it has a compressor and that would make more noise under a strain . refrigeration units strain when the box is warm. let it run and bring down the temp of the box and then see how much noise it is making . 12 hours should do it.

Wine cooler cools but has a very loud, too loud to ignore, whirring sound when it is in cooling mode. Any ideas?

And when the wine is cooled ... the noise stops?
It's like a refrigerator ... it only operates when it it is reducing temperatures. Once things have cooled, the system cuts out.

If your wine cooler stops making a noise when the wine is cooled ..ok.

Loud noise

The compressor fan is making the noise and causing overheating as well. Easy fix. Call Danby with model # and they can figure out correct fan. Part will cost around $10 and is easy to replace. Plug and play with screws. Good luck

Noisy Wine Fridge

The problem is likely with one of the two fans. A new fan is available from Danby (1-800-263-2629). My noisy fan is the condensor fan located at the bottom rear of the device. After removing the cooler from under the cabinet, the source of the noise was obvious. You will need to tell them whether it is the upper fan or lower fan. Leave the cooler upright for a few hours before you plug it in so that you do not damage the condenser. Price for the fan from Danby is $20.15 including shipping. Danby Wine Cooler Chatter

The compressor has rubber grommets that isolate/insolate it from metal on metal. What is happening is that one of these has worn through and now when the compressor kick in or out it shake which is normal but gives you that metal on metal clanking which is not normal. Look at the back and see where the compressor is held inplace by pins you will see rubber donuts/grommets. One or more are wore out. You can probably find some on a unit at a salvage yard on a small fridge and you may be able to buy some an appliance supply warehouse....
