I took a clip watch to the Mall today and had the battery replaced at the Dakota Kiosk. It cost $10. They used a tiny knife to pry off the back. I was trying to use a screwdriver and that didn't work.

I have a Dakota Mini-Clip Microlight watch and am in the process of changing the battery. First, to get the back off required substantial force with a tough bladed knife. DrewF's comment above was helpful here as I was initially unable to pry the back off. (There is no small recess to insert a flat bladed screw driver for prying.) The large battery now exposed is for the light; on mine, it was a CR2032 H. You're not done yet. The white plastic battery holder must now be gently pried up to expose the watch works and the true watch battery. (Yes, ther are two.) It is much smaller than the light battery. Gently pry it out. On my watch, this small battery was an SR626SW. Tim

Be careful that you do not try to pry the entire white battery holder out of the watch to get at the second battery. You simply lift the top up, leaving the battery leads that go to the red LED microlight. This can be tricky, so be careful. Having said that, I was not too delicate and they survived when I replaced the bottom battery. The batteries in my watch were the CR2032 for the LED and the SR927W for the watch. (The SR927W has a generic matching to the 399 series batteries that can be picked up at most watch, pharmacy and grocery stores. The Duracell 395/399 replacement fit into mine.) Note that after I pried my white battery holder up, I had to press it back down FIRMLY in order to make the red LED light work again.

I have a couple of problems: I don't remember which way the CR2032 (mine are CR2016) batteries go.......... + up???? or + down?????????
also: there is a round plastic tape that was over this battery assembly before the cover goes back on............should it be on TOP of the contact piece? or should it be BETWEEN the contact piece and the battery?
i now have the + side down and once in a while the red light will go on, but not when i press the watch buttons, so i'm thinking I must have something wrong.....It's crazy that Dakota wouldn't have included a diagram of the proper alignment or have one on their website, but I can find nothing.
    Thanks for any help.
    pswerk

Above was very helpful. Thanks. I handled my watch very carefully, however; a spring that I did not observe....dropped out. Where did that come from? I cannot find a location that seemed to operate with a spring. Help!

I, too, had difficulty getting the white plastic holder up to replace the, in my case, 377 battery that actually runs the watch part. Those leads to the light were pressed down into the contacts on the outside edge and I carefully lifted them up and pried up the plastic piece. Before replacing the white piece, I shaved off the nub of plastic on the side that sticks out because, when pressed to get it back in, it was going to damage the hard plastic gasket on the watch edge and that costs more than a new set of batteries! There are some (3 or 4?) brass looking tabs that stick up and are bent over the white plastic and they look like they are keeping it in place. They are not. There is no need to move those at all as they will come up with the white plastic ring. The lithium battery on top in my case was placed positive side down, which is unusual. So no writing could be seen when the battery was in place. The slim metal piece, which holds the lithium battery in, is the contact to the negative side and must be placed correctly for the light to work. Hope this helps!

I left my timex solar watch in my watch case too long - and it stopped working. How do I repower the watch. (I have had it out in sunlight for a couple of days).

I am thinking you need a new battery. It appears to be a battery operated watch that runs on solar power IF there is light.

How long will a Timex Solar watch last?
The solar movement functionality creates an environmentally-friendly and maintenance free timepiece that can be charged through indoor fluorescent light or outdoor sunlight. Once fully charged, the battery life can reach two months. If worn daily, there is very little chance the watch will stop.

Casio pathfinder battery operated watch keeps blanking out display?

Your watch is solar powered, so I think it isn't charged lately. At a low charge, the watch goes into saving mode by switching off the display (while keeping the time, date, etc.). To charge the watch leave it in a brightly lit spot for a day or two. That should be enough to make the watch function as normal again.

For more information, you can download the manual of your watch here (direct download link):

How do you get battery out of watch? Do I have to take out all screws and remove top piece?

The back of the watch has six rectangular notches around the edge. Using a jeweler's case wrench and 4-pin vise to hold the watch align the three teeth of the watch to three of the notches on the back and turn counter-clockwise. Considering that the tools alone are going to cost you a minimum of $30 - $40, and then you'll have to purchase a battery for $5 - $7, I'm going to recommend that you have the battery professionally replaced for $10 - $15 at your local jeweler. Keep in mind, I'm also considering the fact that you suggested dismantling the watch in order to change the battery. This is obviously an indication that you have no experience in the most basic servicing of a timepiece and to ensure that your timepiece isn't damaged, you really should leave this to a professional. Manuel for yacht timer 700 please. Best regards P.Hessner

Could not find a download for instructions on this watch, but I did manage to find some basic instructions for the Sector brand. I hope this helps as this is the best I can come up with.
Good luck.
Sector Chronograph Watch Instructions
  • Most chronograph watches have screw-down crowns for water resistance. You must unscrew the watch crown before you can make any changes to the watch time. After time is set screw the crown back in. To utilize the chronograph dials, use the buttons on the side of the watch. One button will be for the second timer. Press once for the second hand to start timing. Press again to stop it. Another button will be to reset the second hand timer back to zero. Sector Chronograph watches may have different dial functions (see link in References).
  • Sector Dual-Time Watch Instructions
  • Because Sector watches are known for their sports capabilities, the Dual-Time watches have screw-down crowns. For Dual-Time timepieces, unscrew the crown counterclockwise. Pull the crown to middle position to set the date. Pull the crown out to its fully extended position and rotate it to set the day of the week, hour and time. Press and hold in the crown and turn clockwise to seal the crown back in to the watch.
  • Sector Ana-Digi Watch Instructions
  • Sector Ana-Digi timepieces have analog hands plus digital timekeeping functionality. To set the time, unscrew the crown counterclockwise and then clockwise to the appropriate time. The digital functionalities are programmed by the buttons on the side of the case. Depending on the style of the Sector watch, you can set the digital time with one button, set the date display, 1/100 seconds chronograph timer, altimeter, thermometer and alarm functions.

How long should a watch battery last? I bought my

It is hard to say how long a battery should last without knowing the details of the model.

If it is just a timepiece without any additional functions, then a battery should last at least one year and often will run for two or three.

If there are other functions e.g stop watch, back light, memory, alarm etc., then the life of the battery will depend upon the extent to which these functions are used. How long is a piece of string?

If you think that the battery failing, then take it back to the supplier and ask for a replacement, (if you have the receipt).
