Freezer cycling on and off rapidly

I have an old (maybe 15 years) upright Hotpoint freezer. Ever since I defrosted it 2 days ago, it has been cycling on and off about every 2 - 3 minutes. It is still maintaining a 0 degree temperature, but on a lower setting than before (2). Mainly, I just want to know if the problem might be an easy (inexpensive) fix, or is it time to get a new freezer?

If it still maintaining temperature but is short cycling your control for the temperature is wearing out causing the short cycling. This is a replaceable part that can be obtained through a dealer or appliance parts supplier. By lower setting do you mean lower number on the control, or lower temperature setting? Normally the higher the number the colder the temperature.

How is it best to defrost this as it is very clogged up with ice?

Hello Cathy,

the best way to defrost that little refrigerator is obviously turn off the unit and use a blow dryer and use it to melt the frost.

I have a hotpoint freezer which is self defrosting but its icing up and warning message keeps flashing up

There is defrost timer, that will shut off the freezer and turn on a heating element that quickly defrosts the cooling fins. then it cycles back on. If any part of that system goes out the freezer will not defrost.

Old hotpoint upright freezer only has 1 temp artic blast....

I would replace the thermostat because is the only thing that controls the temp. , also there's a timer and a terminator but them are only for defrosting the unit.

New freezer. 15 days old. mildew smell in the

There is a curing process for the foam used to insulate these. It can give off a pungent odor until it is fully cured. Only experienced it a couple times in the last 20 years. eric

Freezer won't start after defrost cycle

It might be the timer motor, if it doesn't run. neither does the timer. Easily replaceable and cheap. good luck. John
