Top of freezer thawing

This is a common defrost problem, The ice
is not being melted by the defrost system. he fan can't blow into ref.
Take out back panel of freezer to check for icw build up. The coils should be clean.
There are three components to a defrost system- a heater,heater thermostat, and a timer unless you have a defrost electronic card.
Its best handled by a Technician but you could possibly do it by taking your model number to the nearest appliance parts store and asking for the parts. They are mostly located in freezer ,behind back panel on freezer coils.except the card which is usually located in ref The parts store will have info
Also check evaporator fan in freezer
Also check fan undernearh Ref in the rear
Clean condenser coils underneath

Compressor is supposed to be hot... your problem may be that the unit is stuck on defrost cycle... The defrost timer should be behind the kick panel and have a dial type adjustment on it.... find it and try to turn it just a touch. It may come on but you will need to replace it if it does

freezers have safety devices to protect themselves. The compressor has an internal overload to keep it from overheating. some have external reset buttons and some do not. either way the cause must be corrected. if the freezer was low on refrigerant you would see signs of oil near the coils, tubing, or compressor. If there is no leak, it overheats when there is airflow restrictions(dirty coils) or a fan has stopped working. only a few screws keep you from seeing all there is to see. If it is clean and the fan is running, then the compressor may just be the culprit

Dispose of the unit and buy a new one. If it leaked the refrigerant out you have to fix the leak before charging it again. The chances of finding the leak are slim.

If the door seal does not seal completely, replace it. This is very important for freezers.

Move the refrigerator to a room that is at least 50 degrees F.

Temps on most refrigerators are regulated by the fresh foods temp. If your garage is let's say 35 degrees, the fresh foods temp will most likely never raise enough to turn the refrigerator on. With the refrigerator never running, the freezer compartment will warm to 35 degrees, resulting in everything melting. Even if garage is a bit warmer, say 45, the refrig will not run long enough for the freezer to maintain a low enough temperture. If the garage temp falls to below freezing, say 20 degrees, the food in the fresh foods compartment will freeze. (outdoor beverage dispensers have internal heaters to prevent product from freezing !) these frigidaire made freezers are notorious for having restrictions in the sealed systems that will cause exactly what your describing.

what happens is oil moves around in the freon system and pools up in the capillary tubes and the freon is not able to flow properly. if the unit is under 5 yrs old then should be inwarranty to sears. if its over 5 then probably cheaper to purchase a new one..
