I have a 1 year old 50" Magnavox Plasma set (Model 50MF231D) that turns on for about 2 secs (no display) then turns itself off after about 3 secs. I turn it back on using either the remote or the side manual power and the green led stay's on for a few secs then goes into 4 red blinking LED lights.
Could this be a power supply problem? Any help and suggestions for fixing would be greatly appreciated............
The above fix, listed by Tom saved us!! We did as instructed and took off the back of our 50 inch Magnavox plasma tv. We were not sure what we were looking for so we googled capacitator (image) & there was a photo of a fried capacitator! Sure enough we noticed ours were "fried", we took out the board and went to an electronic supply store, bought the 2 capacitators ($2.00 each!!) and then found someone who did tv repair to sauter the new capacitators onto the board. (It is important someone who know how to sauter and recognizes polarity do do this for you) All in all we fixed this following the above instructions for $34.00 and our time. For a month we were told to spend hundreds getting a new power board!

I followed the solution e-mailed to me. My 50 in. phillips magnovox plasma had no sound or picture. I removed the back panel of the tv ( 55 screws) and removed the circuit board in the center of the tv. There are about 5 or 6 wire connections that you have to unplug, but they are all different in size so it's ot a problem when reconnecting. Take the circuit board to a tv repair shop. There are 2 capacitators side by side at the bottom center that were bulgeing. 3300ua 10 volt. I had them replaced by the repair shop while I waited. They had (1 ) 25 volt and (1) 16 volt available. The voltages do not have to match each other. The higher voltage is better. I put the tv back together and HURRAY!!! it works. I have been searching for a solution since last summer, Thanks to fixya.com my problem has been solved. It only cost me $35.00 total.
I thought the tv was going to the curb, thank god I didn't toss it. I hope this solutions works for the endless number of people who have posted this same prolem. GOOD LUCK!!!

OK - Skeptic here, have (had) this exact problem... Hit the power button...click-click - 3 seconds clickclick - red LED blinks 4-times. Opened the back and sure enough, at the bottom of the center "mother board" there were two capacitors with that "bulgy" look. I figured what the hell- I'll try it. A trip to Cables and Connectors in Newington, CT and $11 later-----FIXED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's easy and saved me about $800.. thank you!!!
Wow worked for me too. Tips to save you time: must de-solder the bad capcitors to remove them from the board. I pulled the first before de-soldering and it was a pain to remove the little spike left from pulling the capacitor out. Get a good soldering iron and something to remove the old solder. I got the de-soldering braid at RS too. They also have the small vaccuum pumps too (see you tube ). Also, get your hex bits out too. Good luck to all and my tv is now repaired for pennnies. The 32" and 50" are practically the same so it might work for you.
Solution #6 worked for me on my 3 yr old 50" Plasma. Not sure how long it will last though. I dread the thought of taking this TV from off of the wall. It's just too heavy for me. If not for that, I would have no problem trying fix #1.
We have been having the same problem with the TV not coming on and blinking 4 times in red. We shut the power off turn it on, shut it off, etc. This makes us mad! You pay a lot for a 50" TV and expect it to work. We have owned ours for 3 yrs. and about a month ago it started having this problem with the delay before it came on. Now we are going to try to take this 50" off the wall and replace the capacitors ourself. Maganvox told me the TV was too old and to contact a repair person. The repairman quoted me $125 just to come to my house and any parts were additional. So thank you all for your advice we are going to try to fix it ourself.
Used another poster's suggestion. Found two blown 3300uf 10v capacitors, replaced them at a cost of $1.40 each. TV working fine. LOVE you posters. Thanks so much!
Had the same problem with my 1 yr old Magnavox 50". Took the power supply board out and replaced the 2 lower middle 3300uf 10v capcacitors and it works fine. I actually replaced them with 16v.
TV works greak again.
I still haven't resolved this issue with this set. I've tried pushing the menu button on ititial power green LED and nothing. I've plugged it into its own power source separatley with a surge protector and nothing. I've turned it on an off repreatedly and nothing. As a matter of fact it was completely unplugged for over 5 months now and still the same issue. On Magnavox site they claim installing the software upgrade with alleiviate this problem but what use is that when you can't get the TV to stay on for more than a few secs. Or get the Menu to even appear LOL
It sits hanging 7 feet over my fireplace collecting dust. When I purchased this TV and had it mounted upon turning it on I needed to install that SW upgrade out of the box. Its the same SW upgrade I already DL onto the set. Calling Magnavox customer service is is like clapping with one hand. They won't even tell you what the fault codes are. It dusgust me to walk in my house an see this hunk of junk haning over the FP knowing I am still paying on it........... Its over a year old now but it literally stopped working 1 year after I purchased it.
I had the same problem with my 50" Magnavox plasma and used Guest's suggestion and it worked. I hope this is not a temporary solution and that we are not in for bigger problems. My plasma is not even 2 years old yet. Thank you, Guest, for your solution!
cris1114, my son repeatedly hit the menu button... did you try that? Hope yours is working again.
Had the same problem with my 14 mo. old Magnavox 50" plasma. Left the tv unplugged for two days, trying over and over for it to come on. Finally, Magnavox told us to push the menu button as the t.v. lighted green temporarily-surprise, it worked. I was ready to put it on the curb. Hope this helps.

have the same problem here with my 50" magnavox plasma...it shows green then blinks red 4 times then a puase then blink red 4 times again and so on...tried the menu button thing like the previous person did....didn't work for me...I also hear some clicking in the back of the T.V. when the green light first comes on then a couple of clicks then I see the red blinking lights......anybody got any other suggestions????

I have the same problem tv won't come on you hear a couple of clicking sounds and then the green light tuns into red blinking light that blink 4 times and then continues to blink that pattern. I hooked my tv to it's own surge protector and repeatedly switch the tv on and off with that and eventually get tv to come on. I am leaving my tv on all the time and that is my solution for now. I have a good bit of electronic experience and I get no solutions from magnavox and don't have faith in my local tv repair man as this is more of a computer monitor than a tv.
Does anybody know what part is going bad in all these tv sets and can you order it.

Same problem. Tried the menu button solution and still not working. Costumer support=useless.
Afraid to shut off my tv in fear of it never coming on again I left it on for 3 straight weeks and yesterday I left it on an idle channel without knowing and when the tv is idle for more than 10min it shuts itself off, and now I cant get it bak on.
My 50" Magnavox is doing the same thing. The website says to install the software upgrade to resolve this issue. I have a 50" plasma. I tried turning it on, the green light comes on for a couple of seconds then cuts off. Then the red light blinks 4 times the pauses, blinks 4 times then pauses, repeatedly. Tried unplugging it for 5 minutes, and still nothing. Can you help me....
For under 20 bucks this can be fixed. After a year of getting no where with any real fix only temporary ones that didn't work for me this is what fixed the problem with this set. You know for something as simple and as cheap as this repair is you would think Magnavox would do a recall on the faulty part. Instead of try and send you somewhere typically 1-2 hours away to get it fixed, risking the chance of really damaging a very exprensive tv in the process and coming out of pocket hundreds of dollars. Friggin nonsense!

I bought my Magnavox 50" plasma in December of 2006. In November of 2008 I noticed increasingly longer delays in the video coming on after turning on the power and then the audio began to delay coming on. After a few weeks of this problem the audio and video then stopped coming on at all. However, there was power going to the unit because the green power light was working. I noticed over 50 other consumers on this website had the same problem. WITH THE HELP OF OTHERS ON THIS WEBSITE, I HAVE FIXED THE PROBLEM FOR $4.24. YES, FOR LESS THAN $5.00 I HAVE A WORKING HDTV AGAIN, BUT WITH NO THANKS TO PHILIPS - MAGNAVOX. THEY WERE USELESS.
HERE IS THE FIX:
1. Unplug your power supply cord.
2. Remove back panel on your HD.
3. Look for capacitors that have a bubbled or slightly raised and rounded top. This indicates the capacitors have overheated or leaked and need replaced. The normal look is a flat surface with no raised feature at all. (I had two bad capacitors that were side-by-side and identical: 3300uf 10v. Also, they should be located on the power supply board. My power supply board was in the middle of my 50" plasma.)
4. Go to an electronics store or Radio Shack and see if they carry your capacitor type and size and replace them yourself if you are comfortable with removing the capacitors and soldering new ones to the power supply board. The capacitors will cost you $2.00 each or less.
5. I was not comfortable replacing the capacitors myself so I removed the power supply board by removing the screws and unplugging several wire connections. This was not difficult at all. I then brought the power supply board to a local electronics shop that did repairs on HDTVs and simply asked them to solder the two new capacitors onto the power supply board. They did it for FREE while I waited and it only took about 10 minutes.

Some people on this sight suggested replacing the capacitors with some that have higher temperature ratings. Based on that advice, I wanted to replace my two that were bad (3300uf 10v) with two rated at 4700uf 35v, but my electronics guy suggested against it. I figure if the problem occurs again, I now know I can get it fixed for less than $5.00. Philips - Magnavox should be ashamed for such poor customer service and not telling people about this simple fix. When I called their customer service support number I was simply directed to a repair place -- two hours away!!!

This is the FIX Ladies and Gents as you can see I since have fixed mine and another on the board has fixed theirs as well with this solution..... I want to tell the world!!!! Thanks to my endless websearch I found this on complaintsboard. Where TOM gave me the solution. One Happy Gunny here....... It is painless and easy on the pockets....

Had the same problem. Took it apart, and 2 capacitors were bulging. 10 dollars and some soldering later my tv works again. Thanks
I wonder if this solution would work on my 50'' Philips plasma. It sounds like the same problem and a repair guy came out to diagnosis and assumed it would be the power supply board and estimated $300 to fix.
Thanks to all that have taken the time to read my post. Since my problem began 4 years ago I have become the "go to" for when my friends or family memebers sets go on the fritz. Not just caps anymore. I have done buffer boards YSUS main X Main logic and have reworked all these boards myself in spare time. I have helped over 200 people fix their sets in the past 4 years since I originally posted this. Where there is a will there is a way....
