You would need either a call manager or call manager express to configure the phone and connect to the phone line.

Unlocking a Cisco 7940

Method 1:
1) Unplug the phone
2) Plug the phone back in while holding the # key
The phone will soon display “Reset key sequence detected”
3) After several lights flash press the following keys in order:
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 * 0 #
4) The phone will then ask you if you want to save the network configurations:
Save network cfg? 1=yes 2=no
5) The phone will soon display “Factory reset initiated” and will continue
through the boot up process.
If that process fails to work for some reason there
is a second method.

Method 2

Complete these steps:

  1. Press Settings.
  2. The Network Configuration lock symbol must be unlocked. If not, exit to the main window and press ** # again.
  3. Press 3 on the keypad (or scroll down) for Network Configuration.
  4. Press 33 on the keypad (or scroll down) to Erase Configuration.
  5. Press the Yes softkey.
  6. Press the Save softkey.
The phone will now be reset.

The handsets will eventually go bad. If it is every single handset that you have, the problem is with the system. But if the problem is only with a few of your phones, you might consider replacing the handsets. We at IdacomUSA.com have replacement Cisco handsets for sale at only $25. Hope this helps you out :)

Hi,

Has this just stopped working, or has it never been working?

On the call manager / CME the MWI (Message Waiting Indicator) needs to be configured. This could be undertaken either via the GUI or from the CLI

For instance ...

ephone-dn 30
number 8000...
mwi on
!
!
ephone-dn 31
number 8001...
mwi off

and also mapped to each phone to enable MWI status

ephone-dn 1 dual-line
number 111
label Chris
name fred
call-forward busy 800
call-forward noan 800 timeout 10
huntstop channel
mwi-type visual

Complete config details are at:http://www.ciscosystems.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucme/command/reference/cme_m1ht.html#wp1018439

The Cisco 7940 Phone...if you work from home and use this phone can your Corp office be able to monitor your calls?

It is possible for them to monitor voip calls, if your call passes through their network, or they do remote monitoring on network traffic. The voip traffic is only data that needs to be 'reassembled' to hear the voice stream. However, this is more difficult if the traffic is encrypted between the phone and the call manager or whatever they are using.

I am no legal person, but I am sure that you would have to have agreed to have your calls monitored for them to be able to do this.

We are experiencing some NW problems with our Cisco 7940 hardphones. We have several installed and for some time now it seems that these hardphones just lose their default gateway configuration and stop...

I would check the firmware on the phones. Also, check that your switches are properly configured. Duplex settings do matter. If your using cisco switches; do a "show interface" and check for CRC errors etc.

Can I use a CISCO IP 7941 phone, that has been on a company network, in my home? Should it just work by plugging in a telephone connection and using the appropriate power supply? Is there programming that...

Yes, there is programming which would need to be removed. However, you would need a cisco call manager($800) at home. Unless of course you have voip in your home. then you could just set it to DHCP I'm assuming and then it should just work!

Cisco IP Phone 7940 and 3com nbx as 3rd party SIP phones

Here are the instructions for configuring these units for 3cx

Since the 3cx softphone worked well, I don't see why you couldn't configure each as for 3cx and make them work as well.

I think the main problem is to determine the intergrated router or Call manager configuration
You can also connect on switch and type:show cpd neighbor This will show the physical port connections
