Lenovo password My son bought a new Lenovo Laptop about 4 weeks ago. He never set up a power-on/bios password. After using the computer in class one night (he's a senior in college), the following morning he turned it on to check email and received a screen requesting a password. Since he's never set a password, he called Lenovo; they said return the unity (only a month old). It has been returned and they called to tell him it would cost almost $800 to get a new motherboard installed - they said there is "no possibility that this could be a computer problem; has to be a user-caused problem...". How can this be? Help!

Thanks adam8117. I guess my most specific question is - how could the password issue happen w/o being initiated by the user? I have worked in the video/audio/automation technology field my whole life and have never encountered a situation where the only swer was, "...it has to be 100% user error - there is no possible way it could be a hardware &/or software initiated issue...". Any thoughts?

    Thanks.

TechDirector,

Was this the power on password? Did your son recently update the BIOS on his ThinkPad?

If so, see this thread...

I am sorry to tell you, but you are out of luck, unless you are willing to go to extreme measures. Lenovo's are one of the worst when it comes to BIOS passwords because it encrypts the password and stores it within a motherboard storage chip. The only way I have seen to even have a chance of getting around a Lenovo BIOS password is to solder an adapter into the motherboard, connect the adapter to the serial port on a second computer, run a specific piece of software, and then sort through hex codes to seek out the actual password field. I'm not sure where you can get the adapter or software, or how much it costs...I just know that it is not something common and not something that is easily done.

My guess is that you obtained a virus. I've seen viruses cause this before, but it wasn't too big of deal those times because those motherboards all allowed me to remove the battery or a jumper to reset the BIOS. Newer motherboards, though, now have security measures in place to prevent the BIOS from being overridden in order to prevent theft of information.

How do i remove or reset the bios password on a Lenovo G580 laptop?

First of all, you need the present password. Then straight after turning the computer on you press F12 or insert multiple times after each other. That way you will stop the normal boot and enter the BIOS settings. There you most likely will be prompted for the password and then under security you can disable or change it.

    Xp200 power on password

Power On password The Power on Password and hard drive password is used to protect the laptop/computer and hard disk from unauthorized access.
The hard drive password is setup in the BIOS you need the hard disk password to remove the password. I'm afraid you may have purchased a stolen laptop/computer. It is impossible to remove a hard drive's password there are no backdoor passwords because the password is stored in the hard drive's firmware. If the laptop/computer has a Power on Password then this laptop cannot boot up.
If the hard drive is password protected then remove the existing drive, replace it with a new hard drive may fix the laptop/computer r BUT it may also set a password on the new hard disk and lock it with the same password. If it does not password protect the new hard drive, then install Windows plus laptop/computer's device drivers and programs to get a working laptop/computer.

My lenovo x61 show a lock hence does not boot. I had set up a bios password which i can't remember.could u have an idea?

    For a desktop computer:
Depending on the motherboard of the computer in question you can:
    • Locate and change the position of a jumper that will clear the BIOS settings.
    • Unplug the machine and pull out the battery that maintains the BIOS settings in RAM.
For the Lenovo x61 and other laptops:
Follow this link to see the laptop manual: http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/42x3550_04.pdf

    1. Turn off the computer.

    2. Remove the battery pack. (See "1010 Battery pack" on page 60 of the above link.

    3. Remove the backup battery. (For how to remove the backup battery, see "1140 Backup battery" on page 82 and page 65 of the above link).
3a. You must remove the keyboard and battery pack to access backup battery.
3b. Remove 4 screws with keyboard icon to remove keyboard.
3c. Gently push the keyboard forward.
3d. Then lift up the keyboard slightly.
    3e. Detach the keyboard connector.
    3f. Remove keyboard.
    3g. Disconnect the backup battery.

    4. Turn on the computer and wait until the POST ends.
After the POST ends, the password prompt should not appear. The POP has been removed.

    5. Reinstall the backup battery and the battery pack and the keyboard.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa.

I have a advent 7113 laptop and i have done everthing to get passed the bios password with no luck been at it for a week now and i think i am going to hit my son over the head with his laptop can any one...

The BIOS Password is set from the BIOS configuration. Ask your son for the password. Once you have this password, you can enter the BIOS configuration and remove/disable this password.
Depending how old you computer is, removing the BIOS battery and main battery for 15+ mins may remove this password and restore the BIOS to the factory default (insert both batteries again) and configure the BIOS Date and Time etc.
BUT if the the password is stored on an EEPROM chip then removing will not fix this problem. There are no backdoor passwords available.

    Unable to start up/unlock computer

This laptop has a power on password. There are no backdoor passwords available and removing in BIOS battery won't fix this problem because the password is stored on an EEPROM chip.
I'm not sure which EEPROM chip is used in you model laptop, but if it is the Atmel 24RF08 chip then you can hack into this to recover the password. For information on how to do this go to :-
