Down. It can take up to 24 hours for the first ice to be made on a new installation. Longer if there is a large in line water filter and it was not purged during installation. Additionally... if there is an automatic defrosting problem with the unit it may not make ice at all. The freezer has to be less than 16 deg F to make ice. If you need more assistance just respond to this post and I will gladly help you. If you need unit specific data PLEASE include your model number in any reponse.

RFG297AARS ICE MAKER SOUNDS AS IF A BALL IS DROPPED AND AT FIRST A LARGE DROP AND GETS SOFTER AND THEN STOPS. IT DOES IT EVERY NOW AND THEN BUT IS GETTING LOUDER. ICE BOX WORKS FINE TO LOUD.

My ice maker does the same thing when ice bucket get empty. The new Ice is dropping on the bottom of Ice bucket, as it fills up the sound goes away. Found a manual but one suggestion from it is turn the freezer temperature down a little more. What empties my ice bucket is it has a lever over ice and when the bucket fills up it will push the lever up and shut ice maker off. On mine I have to pull the lever back down to start the Ice maker. For some reason your ice maker is letting the ice bucket empty before making new ice.

The icemaker in my fridge won't automatically shut off when the bin is full. It has a shut off lever in back of the bin but nothing is contacting with it to stop the ice from being made.

You need to see why the ice isn't building up around the lever. You could try bending the lever outward so the ice will raise it earlier, but cold steel might prefer to break rather than bend.

Cannot get ice maker to dispense ice.

Many ice makers have a lever kind of gizmo (often looks like it is made from coat hanger wire) that is pushed up when tray is full of cubes, thus turning off the ice maker. Make sure the lever is in the down position.

Does the lever suppose to be up or down to make ice?

If the ice maker looks as the one in the photo the metal arm needs to be in the down position for the unit to make ICE.

No ice

your unit may be having an issue with the Ice maker itself. The ice shut off lever on the side of the ice maker may be broken. If so the ice maker would have to be replaced. You can try to move the lever up and down( metal wire type lever) not much about half an inch or so.If you hear a real soft click its ok if not, time to replace it.

Icemaker not producing ice

Most automatic ice makers have a lever (looks like a piece of wire) that is prevented from being in the down position when the bin is full. This stops the ice maker from producing ice when not needed. The lever can also be lifted manually to a locked up position which turns the ice maker off as well. If the lever is in the up position, simply press down on it, it should release and return to the down position. Once down, the ice maker will begin producing ice again (the unit will have to complete its cycle before you see any ice, normally a couple hours or less). Hope this helps.

Please take the time to give this solution a fix ya rating.
