Then lens assembly could be stuck, or the battery could be low or weak. Make sure, first, that the contacts inside the battery are clean (clean them with a qtip and isopropyl alcohol). There's a couple of web sites that explain what things you can try to get it working, and they say about half the cameras can be made to work trying their suggestions:
http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html
Even though the title of this page is lens errors, it applies to "stuck lens", and has steps to take to try to fix it.
This site is for battery problems, which is the other thing that might be going on with your camera:
http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/11/simple-fix-for-dead-cameras-that-wont.html
Try these things, and you have a good chance of getting the camera working again.

My zoom is not working properly.. shuts itself off

Never leave battery in the camera, it gives out fumes that can ruin electronic circuits. You may have to replace the motherboard.

Camera doesnt turn on, it lights up then beeps three times and then shuts down

The camera shuts itself down to protect itself for further damage since it detected a problem. Make sure your battery is fully charged. If yes, then do this little trick. Hold the camera with your right hand with the lens facing the ground. Next, tap the camera's base as you turn ON the camera. This aims to remove any grit of sand or dust stuck in between the camera's base and the side of lense barrel. You may have to do this several times and see it it works.

Please let me know how this goes. Thank you for using FixYa.

Lens wont close properly

hi...
The transmission system that moves the lens in and out has a problem with it's gears. There is most likely a gear or an actuator that has fallen out of alignment and is getting stuck at a certain point as the lens comes in/out.There is some disturbacnce of the lens arrangement that is preventing the lens from coming in/out.Any of these symptoms above could trigger the camera to shut itself off to protect itself from further damage.

Shut down prematurely

It turns out that the problem was the batteries. I put some good ones that I had in the camera and it started working just fine. Even though the others were showing that they at least partially working, maybe just not enough juice to really work. Anyway, with just about any problem - try new batteries first and see if there is any change or improvement.
