I have a SAMSUNG CLX-3170. The yellow cartridge is over, but the black toner is half full. Because the yellow cartridge is empty, the printer does not allow me to print at all, even if the rest of the cartridges have toner... Is there any way that I can still print just in black, or I do have to add a new yellow cartridge for the printer to start working again?

You will need to use the menu on the printer itself to change a setting Press "Menu Select" button to get the menu function Use the right arrow twice to select "Engine", then press the down arrow to the "Replace Toner" menu Press the right arrow for the "Toner Empty" menu Press the down arrow to get the Toner Empty settings Press the right arrow to change the Toner Empty setting to "Continue" Press the "Menu Select" button to confirm the setting. You should be able to print, you just won't have any yellow toner. When you get your toner cartridge, follow these instructions to reset the 'Toner Empty' setting to Stop so you will know when a toner is out.

SOURCE: toner sensor error on an Oki C3520 Laser

Check the little switch/door on the right hand side of the drums.
This has worked successfully for me.

Symptom:
After replacement of a C3530 Image Drum, the message, "Toner Sensor Error" is displayed.






Cause:
The plastic shutter in the ID is fully or partially covering the toner sensor window.




Resolution:
Move the cover upward to allow for the sensor to become fully exposed prior to reinstalling the drum.

Many scanners contain a scanning head lock to keep the scanning head from moving during shipping. This may still be still be in the lock position. All scanners are different but check the documentation on how to remove the head lock.

All of the manufacturers do the same thing to get people to buy their toners, if any toner is empty you don't get to print even black. Sometimes empty toner can scratch a drum so that's the excuse they use for making them that way.
