Nuvi 200w map download and sd card

I just bought the Nuvi 200w yesterday. I registered and downloaded the free 2009 map. While trying to install the map on the gps, a window popped up saying I needed 37 more MB of space on the garmin unit. I installed a new universal 2GB SD Card in the garmin unit to solve this problem. No change. Still get the same window. Is the Nuvi200w software not recognizing the sd card? How do you solve the problem I'm incurring while trying to download the new maps?

Hey justmike000: could you provide details on the free 200w map download, I purchased a 200w at the beginning of April, registered it, etc., but am unaware of a free map update. Thanks.

    ZZeasy.

During the process of registering (online at the Garmin site) the Nuvi200w I bought yesterday, I was informed by Garmin that I was qualified for the free 2009 upgraded Navigator street map within the next 14 days either by down loading it or by CD. The CD was going to cost $10.00 so I decided to download it. The new map may not have been available when you bought yours. I don't know.

Mike, I bought the DVD at Wal Mart so I did not do the online download. If you keep getting server problems with Garmin I would go get the DVD. Did I mention I waited 35 minutes for a Garmin support person this moning. The good news is that he was in Kansas!!!

I have downloaded the 2009 map update TWICE (~3 hours each time), and I got a message saying there was an "unrecoverable error" both times.

ANY idea on how to avoid this???

Tried to install Garmin Map Update 2009 on my Nuvi 650 and I get the message "unrecoverable error". This is with a PC with Vista and also a MAC.
Garmin tech support is no help.

I just downloaded the 2009 maps for my 200W on my external hard drive. When I extract it, it goes through the extraction and then closes the window. I don't know how to load it on my nuvi. It's hooked up to the laptop but how do I get it to load to the nuvi?

Had the maps installed on an 8 GB SD and it would not let me upgrade to a latter version. It reported that there was not enough room. I formatted the card and it still said there was not enough room. I could install the card with files from the computer while in the gps.

Guys and or ladies... I know that you have to create a folder named "GARMIN" in the sd card so the maps can be recognize. Maybe this solves your problem. Let me know if it works.

After you add the SD card, your computer should see TWO drives on your Garmin.

You'll need "MapInstall" from Garmin (free download) to get the entire US. NOTE: You will NOT be loading the entire map update in once action.

So first, do your map update and select a region of the U.S. that either has the main areas you want, or at least can remember what states are already loaded. This will go onto your main drive on the Garmin.

Next run MapInstall, and 1) choose the rest of the map that was not included in the main update, and 2) be sure to choose the SECOND drive on your Garmin (the SD card) as your destiniation.

That's it. Once you disconnect and start up your Garmin, you'll have ALL of the map update available to you. Your device will recognize the SD card and the maps available on it transparently.

Hope this helps someone else. It took me several days to figure this out on my own.

UPDATE: I may have mistyped. While you do need MapInstall, I think my instructions were for MapSource to finish getting your maps onto the device. It's been a month since I did this.

Just completed 1 hr 15 min call w/ Garmin support (first 45 mins on hold)...

- Install WebUpdater http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp This will update the garmin's firmware.
- Restart the garmin to complete the install of FW
- Make sure that you have room on your garmin to accept the webupdater and new map... delete unused help, voice and vehicle files. I now only have American English on my Garmin, but if I pick up a new language I can go to webupdater and reinstall those languages I dropped
- Restart the map update. I'm in the middle of it now, but so far so good

I've purchased the 200w and updated to 2009 map. I ddl and install the WebUpdater which is install on your computer, not garmin gps. Had some problem trying to get the WebUpdater recognize my unit which soon threw out an error message. I suspect it was the registrations problem that was causing all the problems. I disconnected the unit, sign up for a new account, plug unit in and ran the WebUpdater again. It worked! I didn't have memory problem when updating to the 2009 map. Don't know why some people had to delete some stuff. I think there is a pop screen that ask you when updating to 2009 map if you want to keep the current map and data. I opt to override the old map since it is outdated anyway and don't have any low memory issue.

The 2009 map update now works. It was a problem with the server on their end, and all is well now.
As far as the space issue, I had to delete all text languages except the only one I use, English, and for voice I kept only English and English/British. That worked fine and it installed w/out a glitch!

Solution 5 works if you have a small garmin internal memory space and a 1.8Gb City Navigator NT2010 map file. I copied the 1.8Gb ***.img map file onto the SD card and nothing worked. Once you put it in a Garmin folder on the SD Card the Nuvi lets you select the map under Settings and all works fine.

I have gone through 10 hours to get the 2010 update to load on my Nuvi 200w. Much of what is posted here still applies. Map Updater will load what does not fit in the internal memory onto the SD card. However, there is one more point that I found important.

No two points can be duplicated between the SD card and the internal memory. When I had parts of the map loaded in both places, I got into a lot of trouble with the touch screen not responding to certain commands (i.e. Address and Intersection would turn the unit off or cause it to become unresponsive). Once I set up the map segements so that there was no overlap between the internal memor and the SD card, everything went back to functioning normally.

To recap: download the new map update. Use the updater to install part of the map into the unit's internal memory. Be sure to keep track of which part of the map is loaded here. Use the Map Updater to load the remaining part into the SD card as an external drive. Don't overlap your maps.

BTW, I bought 4GB of SD space and used about 0.5GB to load Alaska, Canada, and the western US states. In my configuration, the eastern US is in internal memory. Your mileage may vary.

What do you have

It bothered me that after I did the update it still does not recognize the bridge in Durand WI that I think is over 3 years old.

Attach to PC and BACKUP ALL DATA to a folder, then you can delete the original maps (2008) and upload the 2009 version.

NOTE if you use the garmin software to upload, it has choice to upload to SD or harddrive, this way you can keep ALL maps at your fingertips . . .

same fuctionality for adding custom waypoints, etc

Can we download European maps onto our Garmin 200W for travelling with motorhome

If you bought the satnav in the USA it won't work in Europe. If you bought it in Europe you can download the maps but the full map of Europe won't fit on it. You can fit Western Europe or add and remove countries as you need them. It's probably not a satisfactory solution when traveling with a motor home. You can put the map on an SD card but the nuvi 200W has problems reading maps from SD cards of 2 Gb or more. The map of Europe would take a 4 Gb card to hold it all.

You would probably be better to buy a cheap satnav of Europe. You can get them from http://www.pixmania.ie/ie/uk/xx/617/xx/1914/23/criteresn.html?sSortInfo=Prix-ASC
if you want to buy on line or Halfords shops if you prefer to deal with someone face to face. Some of them cost less than €100 and would be near the same price as buying the map of Europe.

Or if you want a satnav that covers both the USA and Europe and will work in both the Garmin nuvi 1370 or the 2370 would do the job but costs a bit more.

I hope this answers your question.

Bought life time map update for my nuvi 200W. download tells me I'm lacking 459MB. I took every thing off that I can think of and cleared my personal settings. still lacking 459MB. bought 8 GB sdnc...

The reason that the download is telling you that you're short of space when you have the memory card in is that it's trying to download to the satnav rather than the memory card. The solution to this problem is at http://www.fixya.com/support/r5628920-update_garmin_satnav_maps There may be more information there than you need but everything you could need to ask about updating maps is there including how to get the map onto your memory card.
You will probably have problems getting the satnav to recognise the 8 Gb memory card. The smaller and slower the card is the better chance you have but unfortunately older satnavs like the 200w is hit and miss. I have got some of them to work with SD cards while others just will not.

I purchase the lifetime updates for my Nuvi 200W GPS and now it will not allow me to download any updates on to it due to not enough memory. What can I do. I am pretty upset because I spent the money for...

Unfortunately the garmin 200W, like most of the garmin satnavs, doesn't have much storage space so you should be given the option to download part of the map only to your satnav. To get the full map the only option is to download the map to your computer. When you go to download the map from the garmin website select OPTIONS. In the options menu select download to computer. This installs a program called Mapinstall on your computer which contains the map. If you need to use more of the map you can then either replace the part installed on your satnav by running the mapinstall program from your computer or install it to an SD card. Note however that while garmin say that nuvi satnavs support SD cards up to 16 Gb some cards don't seem to work in them. Before spending all the time it takes to put your map on the card test it in your satnav first by putting music or pictures on it to see if it works

I HAVE A GARMIN NUVI 200 AND IT NEEDS TO HAVE THE MAPS UPDATED. IT IS 18 MONTHS OLD AND I CAN'T FIND A FREE DOWNLOAD FOR IT.

Map updates are free for units which are recently sold with the older maps and the new maps have been published, ie you just bought a unit in 2009 which still had 2008 maps on it after the 2009 maps had been released. Rather than recall all the units from the store shelves, they offer free updates on the mapping software. Continually updating the maps on 18 month old units is not free, there is an update charge. What is free from Garmin is the unit's software. Hope this clarifies your assumption.

Garmin 710 Doesnt show all the maps

Garmin maps are married to the device they were bought for. You should not be able to take an SD card from one and have it work in another. Another point is, was the 710 already registered to someone else and never deregistered? Have your registered the 710 and does it show up on your Garmin account?

If the 710 is not on your account, Run Garmin Express (download from Garmin). Connect the 710 to your PC. Any maps that the 710 is entitled to will show up in Garmin Express. You may have to buy the map on Garmin if the 710 never had it before.

GARMIN NUVI 200 SAYS NO DETAILED MAPS FOUND THAT SUPPORT ROUTING

You can download new maps..........free......................but..........

I had this problem last year with my garmin 200 and when I called they said that I was out of the 60 day time window for a free map upgrade but they would give it to me anyway. They gave me detailed instructions on how to download a new map free of charge but they didnt explain which selection replaced what I already had on mine.
As a result, I downloaded the wrong maps and have much less detail. Even though its the "2009" version, its less acurate than my old maps were. But its worth a shot, better than paying for them.

City Navigator Lower 48 States NT 2009

Hello parteeboy24,

The on board memory in your Nuvi 200 may not have enough free space to hold the map. You may be able to free up some space by deleting maps or language packs that you don't use. (Be careful to back up any files you are going to delete.) Or you can add an optional SD memory card to the unit to increase the storage capacity on the GPS.

Best Regards,
Ken
