Simple way is to use a small battery charger (1 or 2 amp) and momentarily contact brushes (very quick swipe). You must watch polarity. Check your manual; generally the positive brush is the one closest to the bearing. Oftentimes problem is brushes have worn and are not contacting rings. Examine commutator rings for smooth surface. Remove diode board and check for leaking capacitor. If it is split open, burned or swollen replace as needed. Good luck
