120 gig Western Digital black no longer mounts on LEOPARD osx 10.5 grrrr

My 120 gig external portable USB 2.0 Black Western Digital drive no longer mounts now that there Leopard/Time Machine on my computer. By About-This-Mac, it is not recognized by the hub drawing power from the logic board port, and it is not recognized when it is plugged into the USB port. By Drive Manager, it is not recognized at all no matter how connected.
Grrrr.  Time machine wanted to reformat and I cancelled this, but how do I get my data off?
Thanks!

I have the same external hard drive, and it is no longer mounting on my iMac or MacBook Pro. It was working great for a long time, and it all of a sudden it won't mount. The light turns on and it is spinning. Nothing that I know of has happened to the drive that would prevent it from working. I have only had the drive for less than six months, and I have been pretty good to it.

Recommend me branded USB drives ?

Honestly, any USB brand will cut it for you. What you want to ensure is that you are purchasing the proper version (1.0, 2.0, or 3.0) for whatever device the key will be associated with. Also make sure you don't buy too little or too much memory. But if you know all this and you just want a reliable brand, I would go with SanDisk.

well, you can get a external hard drive. if your looking at up to 32 gigs of data, it can be as small as a usb key. if its anything more, i reccomend a terabyte harddrive such as the passport by western digital. every mac has a time machine capability which will automaticcally back up your data good luck!

Western Digital My Passport Essential SE External USB 2.0 Portable Black 720GB Hard Drive too slow..

Try plugging it into a high speed usb port, formating it with the size of your files in mind, so for instance if you have lots of big files, raise the allocation file size and visa versa, otherwise buy a faster one.

Failure to read USB connected storage drives

What I have seen with some computer models, is that the USB port cannot deliver enough current to run some devices.

If possible, use an external drive with its own power supply and see if it will work. Most likely it will.

Also, try a powered USB hub. I found that most of the time, a powered USB hub solved many problems with having enough power for some external USB devices.

Maxtor One Touch Mini

Hi Josh!

I assume that you've tried plugging in both the red AND black cables? If that is true, and you're still having the issue, then: Good luck.

Maxtor has decided in all their wisdom to no longer offer the power supplies for this (generally cool) little drive. If your drive now fails to mount after updating to OSX.5 (I'm guessing you are a Mac user by your email addy), one solution would be to go to NewerTech and get one of their very sweet "Universal USB2.0 Drive Adapters" (about $19) and connect the bare drive (from WITHIN the Maxtor enclosure, yes, you'll have to take it apart) to your machine using the NewerTech device.
