The usual things that stop the motor from running are either spark or fuel problems. To test for spark, remove the spark plug, reconnect the plug wire to the plug and have the metal body of the plug rest on a metal part of the engine. If the ignition system is OK you should see a spark at the plug electrodes as the motir is turned over. If no spark then it is either the plug wire or the coil inside the magneto so you will have to take it to a repair shop. If there is spark then it is likely to be a fuel problem of either too much (flooded) or too little which could mean dirt in the fuel that has got into the carburettor and clogged the small passages inside the carburettor which would then mean a cleanout.

To clarify something you said, the accessories should go off when the key switch is in the start position.
Are you getting power to the coil and the computer when the key switch is on and in start ?

Were is spark plug number 1 at on my 3 cylinder geo metro

On GM inline engines, cylinder #1 is the one closest to the front(pulley)end of the engine. If you pulled the wires off the distributor/coil pack, and don't know where they go,put one wire one at a time and crank it.If it doesn't backfire, repeat until it starts.(this is only easy on 4 cylinder or smaller engines)

I have a yamaha EF2400IS generator that starts fine, but when i shut it down and try to restart it hot it will not start up again until it cools down. Please help.

If it doesn't start but turns over ok. It may be a problem with the magneto / wiring or spark plugs. It seems as though this unit has no automatic shut down. I would try replacing the spark plugs BPR4ES NGK or equivalent and gap to .030, oil 5/30 or 10/30 will do takes less than 1 quart, & air filter (basic tune-up) if not performed in some time. Yamaha recommends every 20 hours. Then try again. Here is a link to the owner's manual. http://www.poweredgenerators.com/yamaha/manuals/ef2400is.pdf

Doesn't start has spark @ plug fuel @

try starting meaning pull the rope 6 times and then check the spark plug if its wet clean it or try a new plug, if its dry your not getting fuel in the cylinder which means carb problems. if you have a seringe or something to put some gas into the spark plug hole then install spark plug and try it. if it runs for a couple of seconds then you need to focus on the carb. only put a small amount of fuel in the plug hole if you try it otherwise youll be pulling on the rope for awhile before it will start. hope this helps.

Generator starts than shuts down on under voltage

The problem is related to the engine. When a load is put on the generator, the engine's throttle will want to open to maintain RPMs. If your carburetor is misadjusted or gummed/varnished, when the throttle opens, you will get a fuel starvation and the engine will die. If the generator is used regularly and hasn't sat for a while, first check to make sure the spark plug is good since you don't want to make a carb. adjustment using a worn plug. After you adjust the carb. manuallly flick the throttle to ensure that the engine doesn't 'stutter' or die out. If it does, increase the gas in the air/gas mixture and if that doesn't solve it, remove, disassemble and clean the carburetor.

Generator will not start

If your generator does not start and you have followed manufacturer's directions that came with your owner's manual purchase, there may be a problem with the motor, the points or the spark plug. Try removing the spark plug and checking the gap, then check the start process again after putting it back in. If still no ignition, check the points to make sure they are not burnt. If they appear all right, check to see if you have good compression. If there is not good compression, the rings would need to be changed. If this fails, and there is sufficient gas, it might mean that your motor is inoperable, due to wear and tear of everyday use.

My 5700 watt 11 HP McCullough generator wont start. I'm getting good gas to the plug but no spark.

The spark coil is bad if you have no spark

Small engine repair. Part is expensive.

Have you checked spark for sure?
1) Spray WD-40 directly into carburetor
If machine has spark, it will fire
2) Is exhaust port clogged with carbon and dirt?
3) Get new spark plug
Pull out old spark plug
Put spark wire on plug
Hold spark plug wire with fingers
Put spark plug threads against metal opening where spark plug came out.
Metal to metal
Pull cord or push starter
Look for spark between metal

No spark, then spark coil is bad.
