Although this is very small it led me to the root of the problem.

The display would go blank upon pressing certain keys on the phone ( 1&4 worst ones)

After taking the phone to bits it turns out that the LCD ribbon has a portion that bends over itself right under the area causing the problem. The phone is poorly designed in this respect as the folded ribbon is wedged right between the edge of a metal casing and the keypad.

Over time the repeated strain from pressing on the keypad has damaged the ribbon at the fold causing the screen to blank.

Solution: place a wedge next to the ribbon -between the metal housing and the keypad casing. This takes the pressure off the ribbon at the critical point protecting it when the keypad is pressed. (I used a small piece of card from a cereal packet with thin tennis racquet overgrip stuck to it.) Works fine now. Although this is very small it led me to the root of the problem.
