Are you running it with the choke on? Also if the air filter is dirty it will do that as well. Black plugs means it's getting too much gas and is not getting the proper air to burn properly. Some engines if you rev them up with the handle right as fast as it will go automatically the choke is on.

SOURCE: Briggs and stratton engine surges and slows, repeatedly

There is still either water or debree contaminating the fuel system. Surging is usually debree, empty and flush the tank with gas or Iso alcohol, disassemble carb soak in solvent for 30 minutes blow out the carb passages, reassemble and if the problem persists run engine at top rpm with air cleaner off and block off carb intake with hand, this will stall the motor restart and repeat 4 - 5 times this wiil draw out any debree or other blockage in the carb.

SOURCE: Briggs & Stratton Quattro lawn mower

computerscot is right. This engine is not designed to run slower than a few hundred RPM below maximum. The carb has a built-in fuel pump that only operates properly at relatively high speed. Your motor probably has either missing or weak throttle springs which will lower the RPM. Replace them and adjust the tension so that the speed is up. For a diagram of the carb and springs, check the Briggs & Stratton online user manual maintenence section. Look for file "briggsandstrattonMS5373-GB.pdf".

SOURCE: Briggs & Stratton Modle# 100000 will not stay started.

your engine is only running on the fuel you are pumping in, the carb. is not lifting the fuel on its own, maybe because of water in the bowl or dirty jets. You must take the bowl of and clean it out and depending on the type of carb. it might need a new diaphragm. Stephen.

Lawn Mower Surges

Check valves. Vacuum from the engine draws the fuel in...sounds like vacuum is surging. Also it may have a "fuel pump" that may be bad

Surging problem on 10 HP Briggs & Stratton rear mounted engine on @86 Snapper mower

Dirty fuel in the tank, breather in the filler cap blocked, or partly blocked main jet in the carb, if there is a fuel solinoid on the base of the carb check its function by removing, when the ignition is turned on the plunger should retract into its housing,

Describe your Briggs Stratton Lawnmower Lawn Mower Short Block Problem. I have model# 11A-414E765 Lawn Mower. Starts ok but is surging and when I checked a brand new spark plug it was full of black dust...

I am pretty sure this is a 4.5 Hp engine with the carb on top of the tank. Plastic carb 4 or 5 mounting screws mating carb to tank. Remove the air cleaner... and tighten the carb to fuel tank mating screws. It is drawing air between the tank and the carb. This should stop the surging. If is has been a long period that you used the mower with the surging problem the diaphragm between the tank and the carb may be either out of position or damaged. The diaphragm is not expensive. Usually the first time this symptom presents itself you can resolve it by tightening the carb to tank scresw. IF you have the primer bulb carb..mash the rubber of the bulb against the carb body. If the surging stops... the primber bulb has a pin hole in it.

You passed the mower model number and not the engine model number. When we use the 11A number you passed all we get is the base and handle parts. If you need more help I need the model number off the engine just above the spark plug wire on the air shroud.

Thanks for choosing Fixya,
Kelly

Briggs & stratton 550 / surges, gas hog

check your air filter. If it's clogged, the engine will spool up to keep from dying, run for about 15 seconds, then it will happen again. If that's it, just clean the air filter. Solved my problem

2 1/2 Briggs......doesn't run smoothly....surges at all speeds.

Hi, Check that you have the correct spark plug fitted or fit a new one as it sounds like your plug is getting hot then shorting out.
Sometimes the magnito can do this as well. but I would start with the plug.
