Our Zanussi fridge is frost free type. Last week, the thick ice on the fresh food section of fridge (upper part) was melted by itself and leak the water everywhere. After we cleaned it out, the fresh section started to generate the ice and melted and leaked again. How should we fix it?

So it's not cooling good or is it just the fresh food icemaker not working? Do u see frost inside the ice compartment on bottom of icemaker if u take the ice bin out? Also if fresh food section is not cooling good, are u seeing any water up under the bottom drawer in fresh food section?

The defrost cycle on this fridge is not working. Ice is building up, restricting the air flow to the food section causing the area to warm up, the defrost components need to be tested to find the fault

Most times this is a plugged defrost drain system. The defrost heater in the freezer section melts the frost and changes it to water, this water is suppose to flow down a drain system. If this drain system is restricted or plugged the water will leak inside the refrigerator. The drain system starts in the freezer section with a tray built under the evaporator coil. The water is funneled through a small hose into a cup in the top middle of the fresh food section ( not on all models, but this is the most common way ), from there, the water is directed out the back wall to a drain hose that runs down the back of the refrigerator into a condensing tray. The heat created under the fridge makes the water evaporate and disappear. Some of the cups ( in the top back of the fresh food section ) can be removed for cleaning. A turkey baster can be used to help clean out the drain system. Fill the baster with hot water and "blast" it into the drain hose to help flush it out. A piece of wire or pipe cleaner can also be pushed into the drain hoses to help clean then out. On a S x S style of fridge the drain system is in the bottom back of the freezer section and often you will have to remove the evaporator cover to access the drain hole. You can clean this out in the same manner as previously mentioned, but because of the water leaking into the freezer instead of the fresh food section you will have to remove the ice build up to clean out the drain system.


If in case the water is leaking on the floor then:--
There are several things to check for. The condensing defrost tray under the fridge can crack or develop a hole and leak onto the floor. A door gasket not closing properly may cause sweating and leak onto the floor. If your fridge has developed a frost free failure problem, often the frost will travel down the suction line at the back of the fridge and drip water on the floor. The heat exchanger tubing can separate and also sweat and drip on the floor. Ice maker and chilled water fill lines can crack and leak as well, this is fairly common with the plastic lines as they can dry out and crack.
Unplug the unit from main power outlet and empty whole unit and keep both the doors open and then connect the power after 24 hours and recheck.This procedure is called manual defrost reset.If this helps then its OK,but if this procedure not helping then its the faulty defrost unit and it needs to be replaced.

You have a frost blocked evaporator. Translation: The cooling coils, located behind the back wall inside the freezer section, have plugged up with frost (usually caused by a burnt out defrost heater, located at the bottom of these coils) which prevents the cold air from circulating inside the freezer, and into the top of the fresh foods section. At the same time, this blocked air flow allows very cold air at the bottom of the freezer section to migrate back into the bottom of the fresh foods section, and thus freeze item in the bottom bins of the refrigerator. Unload the freezer, take the shelves out and remove the back panel. Melt the frost with a hair blower, and change out the heater at the bottom.

The frost build up is blocking the flow of cooling air from reaching the refrigerator section. If you take the cover off the frosted area and melt the frost off with a hair blower your refrigerator will work fine for a few days to a couple weeks, and then the problem will show up again. You need to determine why it is not defrosting by itself. You do not list the model number or even an aproximate age of your unit, so I can not be very specific with a solution. Test the defrost heater and then look at the defrost control timer. Also, look for any signs of air leakage into the refrigerator, such as a poor gasket (look at the bottom of the fresh foods gasket in particular) or a dispenser area if your model has a through the door ice dispenser.

The most likely problem is in the defrost system. Behind the freezer panel there is not only an evaporator fan, but also the evaporator itself, and a defrost heater, termination bi-metal, and drain pan (or trough). You will likely find ice build-up in the evap coil. This could be caused by the defrost timer, the heater, or the termination bi-metal.
Have a service tech look at the unit.

If the frozen side is colder than normal and some extra frost is forming where the fan blows,and there is ice in the bottom of freezer compartment, and the cool side is not cool enough, their is a good possability the defrosting unit is not removing all the frost and ice . the defrosting unit has a timer (usually near thermostat) that turns off the cooling fan and compressor and turns on a small heater around the evaporator ( about 20 minutes every 2 days) (evaporaror is cold heat exchanger coil inside the back wall behind a cover near the recirculating fan0, the fan circulates air to both compartments through two small openings, if these openeing are closed by ice buildup cool air can not circulate to the cool side. cure 1. remove all food and leave fridge off for 24 hours with doors open (take precautions to ensure children can't get locked in side and suffocate, if you get a qt of water in bottom of unit (may leak on floor) ice buildup that the defrost heater can not remove melted and was your problem . turn frig on replace food on unit. cure 2. turn frig off, remove food from both sides, remove shelves that block access to evaporator, remove cover over evaporator if you see the evaporator coils free of ice look at openings (2) to other side, one may be blocked with ice the other with frost, carefully melt ice with hair dryer.
If the evaporator coil is solid ice heater or timer or fan has failed. good luck

the reason is probably that the drain hole in the freezer (i assume this is a frost-free type) is blocked. take off the rear panel of the freezer and you will probably see a block of ice at the bottom. melt off with a hairdryer and free the drain with hot water making sure that water flows freely away
