My computer hangs up just before the log in screen and windows logo. How do i fix it?

Hello

Ok, if you have a installation disc, insert it and boot from the disc. Once you get the option, try a start up repair.

If you cannot find a disc, try booting in "safe mode", once in windows, do a system recovery to the last known good settings.

Wont boot bios windows

Try pressing F8 while the laptop is booting and select "safe mode". If it boots fine in safe mode, it might be either driver issue or the laptop's videocard giving up. The driver issue is corrected by installing the right drivers, you can ensure if the problem is on the hardware side by setting it to boot in 640*480*256 (or lowest possible resolution) and see if it boots. Also, try pressing F8 during boot and select the option to log the boot process. The log file might then tell you what causes the stop/hang.

Use your original Windows XP CD and run the recovery console when starting up the pc. Thats should repair any files which are hanging the pc at the XP logo

Need XP Professional password for Dell Latitude D600

Assuming Windows XP.

Boot into safe mode. Do so by pressing 'F8' a few times just as the computer begins to boot up (right before the Windows screen)

Once in safe mode, click on administrator (or type it in as the username if it doesn't come up with the welcome screen). It shouldn't, by default, have a password if it is XP Home.

Once logged in as administrator, go to control panel and users and change the password on the account you want or create a new one.
