I am using a Sony Vaio VGN-CR220E and starting a couple of days ago, the display has been very dim; so dim that it is hard to even determine if the computer is on. From most angles, it doesn't look like the screen is displaying anything, the only way I can use it right now is connecting it to my tv via the s-video output, or using a flashlight on the screen. I have tried everything I can think of, I have adjusted the brightness, changed the battery settings, plugged it in, adjusted several other display settings, and nothing has worked. I finally went to Sony.com and they said I needed to update my video driver, but that didn't work, then they said to do a system restore, and that didn't help either. Can somebody help me?
Hi,
Since the Sony Vaio VGN-CR220E works except that the display is dark, then it
would be safe to assume that it is only the LCD display part that is
the issue. Often LCD display (of laptops) are working but only that you
can not see the actual display. One way to verify is to shine a flashlight
at an
oblique angle to the screen, semblance or part of the desktop could be
seen s what you have done. If the
desktop could be seen (albeit very very dark background) then it could
either be the CCF Lamps (cold cathode florescent) or the inverter that
powers the lamps.
Often, the defective component would be the inverter. It is
relatively easy to replace the inverted. It is sometimes more difficult
and challenging cracking open the casing of the display panel of the laptop than replacing
the inverter. Additionally, inverters are readily available online. It
is also not surprising that inverters for other brands/models would
also be used in your Sony Vaio VGN-CR220E .
Of course another possibility is that there is just a loose connection or a cold solder in the LCD panel display's circuit boards.
This would be a good place to start for inverter boards. This is a nice tutorial if you are considering a DIY.
Hope
this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back
how things turned up or should you need additional information.
Good luck and kind regards.

I have just resolved the very same issue with a Sony Vaio Laptop screen. Only by shining a torch at an anlge across the screen could I see the display (albeit quite faint even then). The external monitor worked fine. I removed the power lead and battery from the laptop. I removed the four screws on the front of the LCD display case and removed the case by carefully prizing it away from the main outset shell using a miniture flat head screwdriver. As soon as the case was removed, looking down to the bottom left of the casing, I could see a connector which had become very slightly unseated from the connector on the left side of the inverter, just millimeters apart from it's pins. I reseated the connection and booted the PC and it works fine! Good luck and thanks!

The wire to the inverter is very short on this model. If you drop the unit it will likely come disconnected.
You can remove the plastic bezel around the screen and this see connector. It is easily reconnected. The store where I purchased my unit said it would cast $200 to replace the screen

This is caused by your monitors backlight blowing out. Call Sony back and tell them your backlight is burned out. Unfortunately, there is no resolution except to replace the monitor portion of your laptop.

Sony vaio replace backlight vgn-cr220e; it is 53 weeks old. I use it rarely and gently, but I need it so after working with Sony tech support I know it is the backlight that has failed. I need to know how to replace the defective component and where to buy the part I will have to have. Your assistance will be very much appreciated! Thank you, Christa
