If you have your manual for this machine, look on pages 13-16, and check the troubleshooting guide on pg 20. Both explain quite clearly in pictures and words, with suggestions on what starting tensions to use for your project, and how to fine-tune your machine for the best outcome for your fabric..

If you don't have a manual, try this: set all four tensions to four, grab some fabric scraps similar in weight to what you're trying to sew, and test. Serge about 3 inches, check the front and back. If there are not two nice straight rows of what looks like straight stitching clearly placed away from the cut edge, then raise the dial on tensions 1 and two slightly and test until you find the correct setting. BE SURE TO WRITE IT DOWN as a calibrated starting tension for your machine. If the serger track is loose on top and there are not clearly defined, uniform loops on the cut edge, where the upper looper (tension 3) and the lower looper (tension four) threads meet AT the cut edge, then you'll need to loosen tension 3 or tighten tension four, or both.

I've scanned my manual and I'm trying to upload it tonight - it clearly explains, with illustrations, just how to fix the issue. I strongly recommend any time you start a new project, save some scraps of fabric to set your tensions with. I always do this, and I get great results. Let me know if you need more info.

When I sew the stitching wants to gather, I've made the stitches larger and smaller and they still gather. I have a memory craft 6500.

Hi' I'm Peter, I really don't think the length of your stiches is the problem. I was having a similar problem and one of the ladies at Hancock Fabrics told me just to adjust the tension on the thread and WOW something so simple made a world of a difference so give it a try you may have the tension set a little too loose like I did. Hope it helps let me know.

LOI NEED TO KNOW EXACTLY HOW TO PLACE THE BOBBIN CASE IN THE MACHINE. IT SEEMS TO BE WAY TOO LOOSE. WILL NOT SEW PROPERLY. IT STARTS TO JUMP OUT.

sounds like you may not be threading the top thread correctly.
thread the top thead all the way to the needle but not the eye. Then lift the presser foot up and down. You should have tension when the presser foot is down and no tension when it is up.
If this is the case try sewing, if not your machine needs adjusting.
hope this helps

When sewing, the thead underneath is bunching. I am sure it is a tension problem, but not sure how to adjust i

change the needle
set the tension to 3 or 4
clean under the needle plate where the feed dogs are for lint
also clean the bobbin area for lint or loose threads

Fixing the bottom thread when it sews loose

It could be that you threaded the machine with presser foot down.

When the foot is down, then tension control is closed and the thread cannot seat for proper control to the needle.

What appears to be a bobbin problem is actually the top thread not having the tension needed (thead is not where it should be within the tension control) to form a stitch.

THREAD GET BUNCHED UP UNDERNEATH THE FABRIC, THE STICHES SEEM TO BE INCOMPLETE THE TOP LOOKS GOOD THAN I TURN IT OVER AND THE THEAD IS BUNCHED AND LONG LOOPS OF THREAD ARE LEFT. THANKS LOU

Hi Lou! This sounds like a tension problem--the tension on the top thread is too loose. Try using different color threads on the top and bobbin, then carefully rethread everything. Stitch a couple of inches and check the underside. If the top stitches look fine and the bottom ones are loose and loopy, and with the pressure foot down, tighten the tension. Move the knob or dial (whichever you have) just a little bit. Sew a couple of inches more, and recheck. Continue to sew and recheck, gradually tightening the tension, until you see little if any bobbin thread on the top or top thread on the underside of the fabric.

Let me know if this helps, ok?

Thead keeps pulling out of needle

There are a couple of things to check, first of all check that your needle is installed correctly. Thread breaking will happen if the needle is a little off or installed backwards, or even if it may be the teenest bit bent. Best bet is to put in a new needle and make sure the groved side of the needle is towards the back of the machine.
A misaligned needle can also throw the tension out, so once you are sure about the needle you will have to adjust the tension following your machines instructions.

Bernina Bernette 600 Deco embroidery machine

It could be that there is a loose piece of thread, or some fluff which is obstructing the tension gauge. Try blowing around the theading area (or even run the hoover pipe near it to see if you can **** it out). I cleared mine by folding a piece of non fluffy material and rubbing gently between the tension dial and machine.

Good luck
