I have a problem with my new ViP722k DVR that results in no recordings taking place. I thought originally it may have been only when the power has been turned off by my ESPN universal remote control, due to its shutting the power down so "far" that the receiver cannot wake itself up for the recording schedule. But even when I attempt to leave the receiver on it does not seem to respond to the schedule unless we're actively watching one of the two TVs through the receiver! Another thought I had was that somehow the Audio Tuner/Amp we use may be related (an Onkyo), so I connected the DVR HDTV directly to the TV. But that has not helped either. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated!

Well, I'm trying to decipher this. Why does the recording in DVR revert to the default (date/time???) when the light goes off and comes back on.

I'm guessing you are trying to say time, not date, maybe day?

The DVR is trying to remember when a show comes on and record it, based on your settings. Usually shows come on at a specific time. DVRs usually update their scheduled recordings based on updated programming guide information. If you are constantly unplugging or causing your receiver to otherwise restart, most receivers will download an updated guide upon getting power back or restarting (DVRs themselves not having any idea how long they've been without power, download a new guide just in case after you unplugged them you moved to Arizona). During this time, the recording you set is showing the original time you set it up, because until the guide is downloaded, it has no idea that its wrong.


My best advice, even if I'm wrong about our language barrier here, stop unplugging your receiver. Leave it plugged in and powered at all times.

The issue may be is that you have a DVD in your dvr , that still shoes that date and time. Just a possibility, not sure,. try to see if you can take DVD out of dvr, and use a new one. I happened to me but, the case was a vcr,and I had a recorded video tape which while playing , was showing a blue screen, with "no data received" which actually it was when no data vcr was receiving from cable at the time it was recording . If the problem still is not solved then there is issue with some circuits, and processors. Also you may want to check if Bunker Hill has any customer support, to check with them.

You've got a Dish Network's HD DVR and a Toshiba 720P HDTV - so this part of the mix will maintain the HD pictures and high quality digital audio that you're used to seeing.

The trouble begins when you introduced the Magnavox VCR / DVD device. The highest quality video content that this device can record is the 480 type, regardless of the input or source quality - which in your case would be 720P via HDMI cables. 480 is considered "SD" or "standard definition". This is the weakest link in your setup and is responsible for your unsatisfactory results.

The Magnavox will "upconvert" to 1080 lines of resolution. The key here is the term "upconvert" True HD recordings are taken of a scene and capturing either 720 or 1080 lines of resolution in the image or video (such as a camera taking a photo or video); or recording the playback of a previously recorded 720 or 1080 lines of resolution source. Recording a 480 lines of resolution source with a an 720 or 1080 lines of resolution device will not make the image HD. The recording can not possibly be better than the original. In fact, due to losses, each generation of copy becomes worse and worse. Upconverting simply "fills in" the missing parts between the 480 source and 720 or 1080 output with what it "thinks" is missing data. The results are what you see on the screen. The original capture did not save more info that 480 lines of resolution so it is really impossible to improve it.

The recording can not ever exceed the quality of the original (the Dish Network DVR at 720 or more) and will only be as good as the weakest link (the Magnavox DVD / VCR at 480). Additionally, the moment you change from digital to analog, you lose quality instantly. Digital signals - both video and audio will always be faithfully reproduced do to error correcting technology, etc. that simply isn't available in the analog world.

You need to use a digital recorder capable of capturing and playing back of 720 or 1080 lines of resolution video and AC3 audio for optimum video and audio on a Blu Ray recorder or other device with hard drives or memory such as MP3 recorder. Otherwise you'll have to accept reduced quality of standard L & R analog audio and 480 lines of resolution of SD video. You can not expect HD audio and video if you try to save to equipment designed for SD / analog.

First, sorry for the delay in respoding to your post. I did notice that you had a prior question about the Power Supply on an R15 DVR. Does the unit have a manufacture code of 500(found on the right hand front Flip Door of the DVR)? If so, I might be able to help you in repairing the Power Supply. As far as I know, getting your DVR up and running again is the only way to watch your previously recorded programs. As far as retreiving programs from your old Hard Drive via other methods, I probably won't be able to help you there. When I had both of my identical DVR 15 500's apart for a parts swap to diagnos a failed Phototransistor(infra-red sensor for the remote control), I also tried to swap out the Hard Drives. This is what I found: When you swap a Hard Drive into another DVR, it won't play any of the programs previously recorded. However, if you record new programs on the swapped Hard Drive then they will be playable on this current setup. Now, if you swap the Hard Drive back to the original DVR it came out of, the programs will once again be accessible except for any that you might have recorded while the Hard Drive was in the other DVR. So, in conclusion, when programs are recorded on a particular DVR, it is encoded electronically to play back only in that DVR via communication from the Motherboard and the Hard Drive. I know, it sucks, but that is why I was asking if you are pretty sure the Power Supply is at fault. If so, I received info from this forum on how to fix the issue. Also, if the attempt fails, Ebay has some previously owned DVR's for sale and maybe you can get one for spare parts. Remember, the Power Board and Front Display Control Panel are the only interchangeable parts IF you want to view the programs on your DVR's Hard Drive. Let me know what your DVR does when you plug it in. That will go far in further diagnostics of your DVR.

If you have a dual receiver, you can record to TV 2 and watch any program on TV 1. If you have 2 recordings taking place at the same time, you can only watch what is being recorded.

With a dual receiver, you can place the receiver in single mode and watch a different program even if 2 recording are taking place. In single mode both TV 1 and TV 2 will be watching the same program.

A solo DVR you can record to tuner 2 and watch what you want on TV 1. With the VIP 622 receiver, you have the Record Plus option, you can have all recording go to TV 2. If 2 recordings take place, then TV 1 and TV 2 are used.

It is normal for the fan on the 722k receiver to run often to cool down the system. If the receiver is in an enclosed space that could cause the receiver to overheat which would make the fan run continuously.

Try a hard reboot. Hold the power button on the box till it turns itself off. It will turn itself back on. After restarting try to record live tv. If you can't watch recorded shows either your harddrive may be fried. After thought, a $20 tv tuner card from e-bay for your computer, you could record them to your desktop.

Unplug the unit> Remove> Take out to back yard> Smash repeatedly with a sledge hammer of at least 2Lbs> Mail the resulting material to cable company preferably next-day.

The problem you're having is known as power cycling and it can only be resolved by replacing the receiver. Unfortunately it depends on which model receiver you have.
